I dropped this subject in a few other topics but I'm starting the project this weekend so I'm creating a new one so I can give a good follow up including pics and maybe some video...
I bought a Phantom 1000 a couple of days ago with the intention of fully converting it 
The first thing I'm going to do is installing a gas spring. This should make my phantom a lot more enjoyable to shoot and drasticly improve accuracy  . The only gas spring conversion kit I can find is the Air Venturi Gas ram wich costs about $250 where I live...
I made a trip to a local hardware shop today and I found gas springs that could fit the phantom (and all other spring rifles) for under $30!!! And these are high grade springs for industrial use!
They ranged from 100 to 1000 newtons pressure! so I can buy different springs for different shooting activities 
I'm fairly new to airgun modification so I have some questions about all of this...
1) What is the power in newtons on a normal spring?
2) can I take out the original spring without a mold? or is the spring to stiff to do that safely?
3) what is the maximum power a rifle can take? |

Do you mean adjustable in length? or adjustable in pressure? I can order the spring in all lengths, diameters and pressure settings so I just need to figure out wich one to use...
They also sell adjustable springs but they're impossible for this modification because they're not fully cilinder shaped. |

Pressure adjustable.
I'm not sure if parts that aren't ment for that purpose will work very well... |

I'll never know if I never try
And I don't think it's a problem that it isn't built for an airgun... it just has to compress and decompress the gas, that's it and that's exactly the purpose it's ment for  |

Bad news... the gas springs I found appear to be slow working ones. They produce enough power but when the spring is fully compressed and wants to come back out again, the airflow back out of the cilinder is not sufficient enough to make te spring slam really hard.
They guy working there promised me he would search for a faster spring but he couldn't promise anything...
Other option is to drill small holes in the top of the spring to produce a better airflow...
Also I put the original spring trough a test and I found out that it took about 55-65 kilos (estimation) to press it in. So I'll need about 500 newtons worth of gas spring to make the conversion |
