Just Say No To Propane

A while back we had a thread about using
propane in airguns and how this is a very
unwise and dangerous thing to do. I could
not believe my eyes when I happened across
this site. Scroll down a little and click on the
red propane adapter. Then click on second
adapter.

Scroll down to the comments. No where do they
mention the danger involved in using propane
as a power source. What are these people on?

http://shortyusa.com/index.html?RID=4328

The first post mentions that the only thing that
you have to worry about is crossthreading the
adapter.

Another guy was worried about his fingers freezing.

How about Pros: Gets rid of a dangerous idiot when used
as directed.

Cons: May kill injure innocent people when/if it blows up
or blowtorches.

I cannot believe how blind some people are to obvious
danger.

I think that later on today, I am going to register on
their forum and ask about the danger of using a pressurized
highly flammable gas for a propelent.

Any wagers as to some of the responses that I may get?

That website doesn't 'track' very well- you need to go to the main page and then click on "Gas Gun propane adapter" then "Mad Bull XG-01..." to see the text.

Seems it's not just these guys- but a number of companies making adapters to use propane on their airsoft stuff. I think 'airsoft' about sums up the intellects we're talking about here anyways.

And yes, I'd like to know what numbnut decided propane was a viable propellant. If you also note- in the website's actual sales text for the adapter, it states "will not work with guns rated for R134a". How'n the heck are any sort of airgun legal to use with greenhouse effect contributing gases? This seems absurd. Is any of this stuff legal? It's obviously short-sighted, seems to have been devised by someone with a mental disability- but legal?

"Stupidism"- that's a word that fits alright- but I hadn't heard that one before.

I think you know what to expect if you post anything there, CW! You like being called names and beat upon by a bunch of kids? If so- I think you found the right place.

Seems this sort of thing has been going on for awhile- under the name "green gas"- which is obviously methane or something that is supposed to be used as an alternative energy source (i.e. for power generation or heating)- thus the "green". It's tough to believe this sort of thing somehow caught on in a "sport"! Maybe everyone involved in this sort of thing should take a page from this website: http://www.mfiap.com/airsoft/acce/gas.htm

look at the two title bars after the header- I think someone there finally figured it out...

Hi guys
If I may , Id like to add some info regarding the use of propane as a propellant in airsoft ( not airguns / rifles ) . Actually the people who developed airsoft gas blow back guns specifically made them to fire on what was know in the industry as "green gas" . This green gas was marketed primarily for use only in metal airsoft guns, predominantly for the gas blowback handgun models. Abs or plastic gas blow back guns ran on HFC134a or what is known as duster gas .
As it turns out green gas was actually found out to be propane gas. The only difference of the green gas to the propane found in outdoor stores for cooking etc was that in the "green gas " a fragrance was added as well as a bit of silicone. The other big difference is in the packaging. Green gas is sold at a premium price compared to the standard propane. The scary thing is that the green gas containers are not really safe. Basically they are the same as a can of shaving cream. Nothing like the industry safety approved containers that hold propane.
I think to paint all airsofters with a "stupid" brush is a little harsh. Many of them play airsoft because they like guns , and military. Actually I know several airsofters who are actually in the military and police forces. They think of the sport as an exercise in tactics and so on.

Anyway just thought I would post this bit of info

cheers

I'm sure you are correct in painting everyone of a group with the same brush isn't quite right- but man, "green gas" and propane powered guns, being built and promoted, not just by people with too much time on their hands- but by manufacturers seems to be a pretty disgusting situation and gives a black eye to everyone involved in airsoft I might suggest.

I still have a problem even with using HFC134a/R134a- these are greenhouse gases that technically should not be expelled into the environment. Why not carbon dioxide? At least it is only accumulated as a by-product of other processes, not manufactured solely for the purpose of being expelled into the environment. And no, I'm not some sort of "greenie"- but doing something "just because I can" seems to be lacking logic.

I quite agree about the the choice of propellant being harmful to the environment and such.
CO2 would be a very logical way to go and in fact there are some "low end" airsoft that use the 12 gram cartridges as a propellant.
What I am concerned about is the manufacturers who sell the specific cans of green gas in containers that are not up to safety standards.

cheers

Funny timing... Propane and Butane sniffing has become verry popular in Belgium and has been in the media repeatedly in the last few weeks Rolling Eyes resulting in a serious rise in lighter-gas bottles over here Mr. Green

Last week two 14 yo girls were burned over their entire body because they wanted to smoke a sigaret while sniffing gas... idiots Rolling Eyes

I can see how some of these paintball users will be storing their guns and cannisters in small, confined spaces like closets or cabinets. Not such a good idea. Many people are familiar with the warning against storing propane bottles for the gas grill indoors. Propane is much heavier than natural gas. As such, it tends to puddle and flow on the floor like a liquid. Should a propane container leak in a basement, the gas will slowly build up. If it reaches an ignition source like a gas hot water heater it will detonate. Propane needs much less air to become a combustable mixture.
