Big Bore Air Guns

I have been trying to get a Quackenbush for almost a year and with the way the last waiting list went, I have almost given up.

I do have the access to machinery, mills and lathes, and would like to try and make my own big bore airgun. I am not sure if someone has plans or a good idea of where I could start, but I am more than willing to give it a shot.

Any help or guidance will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

You could also look at the Sam Yang guns from PyramydAir:

'Yangs are generally pretty good.

You could get a Condor and turn down a large bore Lothar Walther
match barrel (or any other large bore barrel) to fit in it. I have a friend that
put a .457 barrel in one with an 800 cc reservoir. He gets 6 shots at
552 fpe before a refill. We went elk hunting and it drops them fast
out to 100 yards.

Robw, do you or can you get any photos of the Condor? That sounds like an easy way to do it.

Also, would the valve size or any of the internals need modified? I don't know much about the Condors, but are there internal differences between the calibers besides the barrel/breech?

Obviously, significant modifications would be required as the bore volume of a .45 cal is 325% larger for the same barrel length than a .25 cal.... and typical bullets are 1000% heavier....

The Sam Yang's are pretty solid construction- it is that southern Asian styling (yeah I know that may not be too 'PC" , but we've all seen it on stocks- alot of swoopy patterning and such) with extra design on the metalwork. The only complaint I have about the "Recluse" is with the dual-tube version it is too front-heavy. Other than that it "feels" fairly normal.

If you go over to the Talon forum there is a lot of information on how
to do it. Be prepared though, the people are a little strange there.
There is a lot of gay banter and joking around. So if homosexual
talk does not bother you, you may be able to get some help.

That's what happens when the main demographic is guys who haven't had any 'wood' except on their rifle stocks for 10 years...

I came across the Airgun Development website where there is a .308 ball conversion. Pretty neat stuff.

Is there one big bore caliber that is easier to get pellets/bullets for than others? More options?

Probably 9mm/.357 has the largest variety, with a couple of 78 gr. pellets available and lots of cast bullets from 90 gr. to about 158 gr....

The only pellets in .30 cal are the new 46-50 gr.JSBs and they are a bastard size at .300" whereas nearly all the barrels are .308 to take cast bullets of 75-120 gr. in that size.... The "new" airgun barrels by FX and Daystate are for the new .30 cal JSB pellets (or vice versa).... too bad they decided to change the size, it makes the pellets and the bullets non-interchangeable....

In the larger sizes, a lot of guys prefer a 0.452 bore to use the .45 pistol bullets.... others prefer a .457-8 bore to use the cast bullets for the 45-70 which are a lot heavier.... The weight of the bullets dictates the FPE level of the gun....

Larger calibers are rather uncommon....

I don't care for the stock's looks either. Looks more like a shotgun--sort of. I suppose it could be redone with a new fore end, but they do feel good in the hands.

Possibilities: Top is original
