I just read a post on an other forum that I am not a member of about using heat to choke a barrel. I believe that a poster had said heating the barrel up to 600 degrees and letting it cool. Does anyone here have experience with such a method?

It would help if you were going to put it in a roller box on a lathe and choke it that way, but I cant see that heating it to just 600 deg and leaving it to cool would do any good?

I'm with Alstone - I can't see where heat alone would choke the barrel. Some sort of mechanical force would have to be applied.

Perhaps they were talking about heating a muzzle brake, which would then cool, contract, and cause the constriction. You're only talking about half a thousandth or so.

Use the search function on this site and you will find several discussions about choking barrels, ranging from using pipe cutters to hammers.

It really would depend on the alloy of the barrels and the stresses that have been set up during the manufacturing process. It could just as easily relax in the positive direction.
Also 600 deg would not likely be hot enough. you'd be closer to 800 deg I think. Bear in mind that when a part is silver soldered onto a barrel your looking at about 600 deg of heat.

My own experience is the same as Al and Slavia have indicated. The most reliable way is to roll in choke. Less reliable is to shrink a very heavy sleeve onto the barrel. Then machine the sleeve off.
