I was at Dicks Sporting Goods yesterday and I saw an airgun package that I thought was worth mentioning here. It's a 'bug out kit', just in time to cash in on the current hot marketing trend of the world ending. Whatever. Anyway, the gun. It's a Crosman Backpacker in 22 in a back pack with a first aid kit, a water bladder for the bag, and maybe some other survival stuff. The whole rig was about $120.
Not a bad rig for fun in the woods. |

Sounds fun.
I'm not much of a survivalist. I like to be "boy scout prepared" for storms and things like that, but in regards to end of the world as we know it stuff...If it's so bad that I need a gun to get through it...I don't want to get through it. |

They should address real threats, like zombies.
They say the Mayans never disappeared, they just moved out of the big cities. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala, so I lived with present day Mayans. Beats me how they could predict the end with such precision - the Mayans I knew had no use for exact timekeeping. |

Yeah. Why is it that a cool outdoor item has to be pitched as a 'Doomsday bug out blah blah'. Why not just admit that we like to spend time in the woods?
Instead of "...in a shtf scenario...." I'd prefer a "hiking and plinking scenario".
Back to the gun. It has the real backpacker stock that quick detaches without tools. Doesn't come with a pistol grip, but that's easy enough to fix. The overall level of what's in the package was pretty weak except the gun. The pack, 1st aid kit etc were all next to useless. You'd be better off putting the gun into a backpack that was purchased separately, but the concept is good. A backpacker, in a backpack. I'm not sure if the pack has any sort of pocket or compartment for the rifle.
I'd really like to see something like the case that the Marlin Papoose comes in. It's a zippered case for the two halves of the takedown 22 Papoose (if your not famillar with the gun, it's worth a quick search. It's a cool gun but outside the focus of this forum or this thread) The rectangular zippered case can then be put into a backpack, or stowed under the seat of a vehicle. I think that makes sense because you have a takedown gun in a case that fits it. You can then make that work with whatever other pack or luggage suits your travel. You can throw it into a little day pack, or bungee it onto a more serious backpack, or a suit case.
http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Crosman_Doomsday_Bug_Out_Air_Rifle_Kit_2289/2913 Pyramid has it for less than Dicks. |

I log onto Brownell's to buy chemicals for gunsmithing and get bombarded with adds for better ways to kill zombies....wtf? |

Nobody I've asked seems to know if it's a joke, or if some douchbag conspiracy nuts really believe it's possible (there are a couple of weekly zombie/undead shows on cable TV now as well).
What bothers me more is that 3 weeks ago Crosman told me the new"Backpacker" was an "online only" US product (i.e. PyramydAir only)- and there's Dick's selling it. WTF about the other dealers? |

Zombies are real - at least zombie insects. There is a fungus cordyceps that infects insect brains, causing them to climb upward. Then the fungal fruiting body explodes out of their head to release spores.
Just a few miles from me they offer training for dealing with the human zombie apocalypse:

We have no problems like these over here life goes on as normal, maybe it because we are in a different time zone to the Mayans, or we are not obsessed with Crosman.
Now beer witha Zombie fungus on top is another matter!

No kidding, me too. I think it's a video game or something that started it. It's getting stale. |

The CDC started a campaign of Zombie preparedness aimed at young adults. "If you are generally well equipped to deal with a zombie apocalypse you will be prepared for a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake, or terrorist attack." |

same kit on sale at walmart for $75
my 1st encounter with zombies was many moons ago when i watched the original b/w movie 'night of the living dead'.
the reason i got my powder burner m&p15 carbine .223/.556 was b/c a shooting range was having a 'zombie shoot'. they had various 'live' zombie targets swinging on ropes & mannequins on wheels (i missed the registration date, so i never did go).
my guess is the reason zombies have gotten popular recently is b/c of the zombie portion of the 'call of duty' video game. it can get the masses virtually running around killing zombies. headshots are an instant kill (but every zombie hunter knows that already). |
