I saw this solution on an Argentinian forum, posted by maddog36. Come to think of it, I have seen Christmas tree stands in thrift stores and garage sales - just never paid attention because we have one already.

It's homebrew from a piece of rectangular tubing and a rubberized coating.

You could always use a u-joint half with a pipe inserted in the end that goes into the stand. Good idea.
