Just out of curiosity, do you use a straight edge along with the checkering tool to get the straight lines? Also, I see you have extended the lines past the design, do you just sand them out?

Decent work for your first time!

Actually, all you have to do is make your first line perfectly the right length and perfectly straight. All the others follow that line because the jointer tools have a side that locks in your last line you made. After that it's pretty much just cut, move, cut move.

That makes sense, otherwise all lines may not be parallel.

I'm getting ready to checker the lines of my 2240 pistol. I figure I'd start on something that I can easily replace.

there are about 12 different border cutting heads and different patterns that can be done with each head. There are probably more, but I only bought dem-bart brand cutters. I didn't have enough money to buy a border cutter too. That will be on a different order as soon as soon as I get the money and figure out which one I like best.

Don't try to checker poplar. It won 't keep a line worth crap. I'm sure glad my local home store carries walnut. Course that just a question of having the money again.

oddtodd,

Very interesting. Keep us posted.

You might want to practice on the same kind of wood as your stock, just to prevent some unwelcome surprises. That means getting a scrap of walnut or beech. I used the American beech clamping parts from a pants hanger to practice finishing.

Nice Job Todd. I am happy to have too much work... but it gets in the way of play...

Okay, one trick I found in a book is that you need to rub oil in evety 1/4 cut you use. It keep the splinters down and keeps you from knocking the heads off the diamonds. More to come as I find out more tricks and I finish my 2240 grips.

I did an english checker and some crosshatching on my 2240 grip. It turned out not looking very good, but I should be able to get some walnut for it soon.

Honestly I think that looks pretty good for a basic checkering. Maybe a little deeper next time. Put some light stain and tung oil on those grips and they should turn out real nice.

I did an english checker on this one. It's not cut as deeply. Poplar is a b!tch to checker, that's for sure.

I've found pieces of walnut that size at second hand stores - look for old trophies, plaques, awards, etc.

Well, I started on my storm with the checkering. It's turned out pretty well, but I do need more practice. There's some scratches where the tool slipped. It is easier to work with though, because it's a good hard piece of beech. I've got about 4 hours into it so far.
