Has anyone tried engraving on metal or checkering on wood? I am thinking about buying the tools (about 25/30 bucks) and trying it myself. I am also interested in stippling. I was thinking maybe my dremel tool with the tiniest round bit I can find? Let me know what you guys think.

I haven't seen much in the way of engraving or checkering here.

We have discussed jeweling:

And:

And we've also discussed stippling:

Keep us posted on what you come up with.

Todd:

If seriously interested in trying engraving, I would suggest buying a book Titled: The Art of Engraving by James B. Meek. I believe the book is still available through Brownells, Inc. 200 South Front street Montezuma, Iowa 50171.

"The Art of Engraving" is probably the most comprehensive & best instructional book on engraving to be found in the western hemisphere.

Brownells also has very good checkering instructional books and, if I recall correctly, some include patterns.

Brownells is also the largest gunsmith supply house in the western hemisphere and carry quality tools and supplies. They don't carry "cheap" stuff - it is quality.

Having dabbled in both checkering and engraving, I would suggest trying checkering first. Then, if you have the patience to do flawless checkering or the ability or ingenuity to "hide" checkering flaws, move on to engraving.

Good engravers are getting hard to find. Good Luck.

Thanks guys. I have a tendency to be artsy-fartsy with things as my wife puts it. I especailly love to add little decorative things like ivy on furniture that I build.

I've thought about doing an ivy theme on my rifle, but I haven't came up with a decent pattern yet.

Here is the gun that inspired me. My dad had it custom made. The gunsmith that made it isn't alive anymore or I would be asking him to take me as an apprentice.

He needs a much smaller bit, so it's less cobby.

You're right. The burr looks to be larger than the 1/8" shaft:

It is possible to go much, much smaller:

CW - did you see the soldering iron stippling on the HW40?

No, I missed that one. I don't think that I would care
too much for that finish.

I've head a lot of people complain about the grip
surface of the P3 and it's clones, but I've never personally
experienced any issues in that area. I use mine mostly
for close pest control and the OEM grip suits that, for me,
to a tee.

I agree. I'm sure it's functional, but none too tidy. I have a piece of 20" bicycle tube on mine. It works just great, and when I get sick of the way it looks I can slide it off again. Melted dimples wouldn't be so reversible.

I will agree with Amigo, Brownells is THE place to go for any of your smithing tools/supplies. I use their barrel threading dies, cutters to recrown barrels, taps/dies, and it is all 100% quality products.
You should go to their web site and go to the video section, they have an archive of smithing videos, and you may find something of interest there. I dont work for them, I have always had good products, as well as the best customer service.
