One of the things I love about owning a using a "Mini Lathe" is...

The availability of parts... www.littlemachineshop.com (aka LMC) is by far your best resource for repair parts, upgrade parts and tooling for both the Mini Lathe and The Mini Mill... I happen to be lucky that I live in the same state so getting orders is real quick.

For those that are just joining us... It's R&R time for my little shop...

In the process of upgrading from a 10" to 14"(16") bed way... I had discovered that the low range gears where almost completely striped out...

I had all ready ordered the Mini Lathe Spare parts kit and it came with the gears... Had I discovered that LMC sold a Metal Gear Set... I would have ordered them... Oh well... next time...

So... Lets get started...

First the disclaimer…
I am not a technical writer and this is the first time I have made this repair. I am relying that you have some mechanical skills and experience. I did this repair the night before I wrote this and hopefully I left nothing out.

Here is a scan of the Head Stock break down from the manual that came with the lathe.

Tools Needed:
• Metric Allen Wrench Set (Preferably Ball End)
• Philips Screw Driver
• Snap Ring Pliers
• Small Pry Bar
• Spanner Wrench
• Drift Punch
• Shop Press
• Socket Set
• Soft Face Hammer
• Gear Puller

First... Unplug the lathe... Mr. Green

Remove the Following:
• Motor Cover #151
• Rear Chip Guard #153
• Chuck Protect Cover (if equipped) #201
• Quick Change Gear Cover #53
• Quick Change Gear #59
• Adjusting Plate #61 (# 63 & 62 Nut & Washer)
• Feed direction Gear Cover # 42 (Leave handle & gears attached See photo below)
• Control Panel #120 (you do not have to unplug all the wiring, but if you do... mark your wires...)
• Wire Guard #174 (just above the Lead Screw)
• Drive belt #29
• Motor #150

Do not remove the Head Stock yet...

Place a skinny pry bar or wrench between the chuck jaws and lock it down in such a way to have some leverage against the bed way... place a block of wood between it and the bed way to prevent damage.

Remove:
• Spindle Nuts #17 (Use a spanner wrench)
• Spur Gear #16 on the spindle. (Use a Gear Puller)
• Spacer # 15
• Left side Bearing Retainer # 10(3 Allen Screws)
• Pry bar from the jaws
• Chuck #15 Nuts #6 x3
• Remove the Screws in the Right side Bearing Retainer #9 (Go through the chuck backing plate. See photo below)
• Key # 8 on Spindle Shaft
• Snap Rings on both sides of the Head Stock Casting on the Input Shaft. #22 & #28
• Dive Belt Pulley #27
• Key #8 on Input Shaft
• Green Ground wires from the face of the head stock.
If your Mini Lathe is equipped with the kill switch… Remove the wiring from the control board… # 6 & 7 on the wiring block. Mark them.

There are 3 Allen Cap Screws under the top of the bed way to remove the Head Stock. Two in front and one in back…

Remove:
• Head Stock
• Wiring Cover Plate # 210
• Safety switch assembly by removing the two cap screws #211

• Turn Head Stock upside down and place it on a clean flat work area

Now you can see the guts…

Here comes the fun part…

Remove:
• Screw #21
• Spring # 20
• Detent Ball #19 (Turn Head Stock over carefully so not to loose Detent Ball)
• Shifting Fork Set Screw # 18
• Shifting Fork Assy. #30 – 34

Since there are various setups for the press work… I am going to leave that up to your experience.

Make note of the placement of Gears # 24 & 14

Press the Input Shaft #26 both ways till bearings #’s 23 are out on both sides. Remove shaft. The input gear #24 will come off the shaft in the process. This can also be achieved with a Drift Punch.

Press Spindle Shaft # 3 out.
Bearing # 11 may or may not come out with the shaft… It is okay either way… You can replace Gear # 14 on re-assembly in the gear box. How ever Spacer # 12 will fall out during disassembly. You can use a Soft face hammer and a block of wood to do this... A shop press is so much easier...

The procedure for re-assembly is the reverse of disassembly.

Make sure your bearings go back in straight.

Good Luck.

Wow! Those are some really roughly finished gears. What's the
country of origin? China? India?
