I bit of background to help you understand me.
I'm 68, been shooting most all my life, powder of course, a.g. for 15 years.
I shoot, I don't tinker.
I'm a disabled copper but still am able to walk o.k. and do some hunting.
I have a 15 year old that is 6'0 & 200, and the finest son a father could ask for.
I have 2 degrees which means I know stuff but can't do squat.
I want to learn to tinker, rebuild, modify, make better some air rifles.
It must be doable huh? I recently bought an old Chinese trainer, single shot, no safety, rifled, nice shape, still works, shoots o.k. but suspect seals and springs need tweaking, replaced, etc.
It isn't worth much, didn't pay much, so thought this would be a good one to learn on. I know I need a spring decompressor, have found plans to make a simple one, looks fairly easy to make.
I need a tutorial, A beginners guide to mucking up an a.g. beyond recognition.
Are there books? Are there web sites that show how an a.g. works as I only know you cock the thing, load it, shoot, it and have fun.
When something other than a scope goes south I'm lost and the a.g. sits and gathers dust.
Have:
Arrow Chinese Trainer
RWS 350
RWS 48
Walther Talon
Gamo Whisper
All perform well except the Arrow or I wouldn't have them.
Tinkering with a.g.s sound like a great hobby. |

All springers are similar, look at some online tutorials (i.e. Youtube) for any springer disassembly to get the basic idea- maybe you can find a video of one of your existing rifles if you're lucky.
The Chinese rifle will be pretty basic- piston, spring, guides and a rear cap- not as easy to mess up as something like your Diana 48. The Gamo would also be a good bet for a "trainer"- not too complicated either. |

Great. I just got off Youtube and found a couple of basic tutorials.
The Chinese Arrow would be a good place to start, not going to mess anything up that cost a lot.
I forgot that I have an old Gamo, maybe 15 years old that isn't very powerful, has a horrible trigger, but if I can control the very hard trigger pull the accuracy is there.
It's a .177 and it too would be a good place to start.
Maybe I can even improve the trigger a bit & get a little more gas out of it. |

Here's my spring compressor, I should have made the cradles a little higher. Some times its hard to get at all the parts. |
