I finally got the R1 and the Marksman 0035 rebuilt. The marksman got a new spring that was an inch longer than the 15 year old one it replaced. The hardest part was getting the trigger back in.
The R1 got a new spring that was over 2 inches longer than the 31 year old one. And the wire diameter was noticeably thicker.
I noticed the R1 cocks heavier and now recoils more now. I am going to chrono tomorrow. It ran 671 with a spring that had absolutely no preload. Now with new spring and piston and breech seal and lubes I hope to hit that 1000fps.
It took two guys to get that R1 spring back in!

Ok. I chronied the rifles. The marksman went from 450fps to 565fps. The R1 went from 671 to 860fps.
The marksman is 13 years old and the R1 is 31 years old. Neither have ever had a bore cleaning. So yesterday after the chrono, I scrubbed the bores with Hoppies #9. I was shocked at how filthy they both were! I had to go thru my cleaning ritual twice to get them clean. I wouldn't doubt if they gained some more velocity as a result.
So in the rebuild process, I used brake cleaner to clean the piston cylinders of old lube and grit. I used moly grease to lightly coat the piston seal sides and the piston sides. After carefully sliding the piston home, I used a long Q tip to lightly coat the cylinder sides behind the piston.
There is no lube in the compression area in front of the seal. So I wonder if the moly on the sides of the seal is enuf or should I get some silicone oil in there?
After the bore cleaning, the R1 groups went to crap with Gamo Tomahawks. I have around 20 shots in the bore now. I am wondering when it will tighten back up?

you don't want moly on the front side of the seal.if its smoking when shot it will burn off after 50 or so shots. as for cleaning it might have changed the accuracy but increasing the speed will affect accuracy too. id shoot it a lot and get it broke in again cause every new part has to wear in and after 2-300 shots then its time to look for its best accuracy. changing pellets helps too. I prefer crosman domes in the box not the pellets in the tins,the tin can pellets are ok but the boxed pellets are much better quality

More testing today. About 300 pellets. Things I learned were the R1 will jar itself apart it left to its own demise. And I mean everything.
So the vertical stringing continued. Eventually I broke out the P1 pistol and chronoed it. 560's! At this time I ran the same pellet thru the R1. Low 500's. Pure disgust!!
So thinking the R1 will need to come apart again I had nothing to loose. So I applied some synthetic non flammable oil (4 drops) thru the transfer port. After working the piston back and forth I noticed an immediate difference. After 20 shots I noticed the breech stayed dry after each shot and the slight smoking stopped.
Out came the chrono for a 958!. After a couple hundred more shots I was still seeing 955-965!
These were run of the mill Crossman pointed hunting pellets from WalMart. And this is why the groups were not that good.
