I just bought a Dasiy 880 with scope and am sighting it in using bbs. I am finding it out it's not as accurate as my Red Ryder 1938b. My targets are set at 20yds. The Red Ryder holds a consistent pattern of shots within 2 inches apart while the 880 with a scope is somewhere about 5 inches apart. What the heck is going on? |

Are you shooting BBs through the 880? The barrel is rifled and too big of bore for good BB shooting. If lead pellets are shooting badly, that would be unusual for an 880, at least the ones I've had, unless they are Daisy branded pellets. If you have Daisy pellets for it, I recommend trying Crosman or Crosman Premier...or nearly anything else. |

Yes I'm shooting bb's. It's a matter of cost to me. I can retrieve the bb's and reuse them over and over. I may try patching the bb's similar to my black powder weapons to get a better fit. Thanks for the info. |

I don't see why not. Steel BB's entering a soft backstop probably won't be damaged like a lead pellet.

You may wind up using calipers to sort through your BB's to make that work. You might also try different patching materials than cloth - maybe cellophane, waxed paper, etc. Patching a lead round ball is finicky enough - I have taken calipers into fabric stores. By the time I eliminate anything that's not 100% unbleached cotton, then I start measuring to get it just right. BB's will probably be even more critical.
I tried using whole and partial felt cleaning pellets as wadding. I pried the lead heads out of some plastic-skirted pellets to use as BB sabots. I tried the sabots with 4.3mm ("Zimmersteutzen) shot. Tried lead and steel. Tried silver and copper BB's. Tried muzzle-loading and breech loading. Nothing gave me more than a very modest increase in accuracy - not worth the incremental increase in monkeying around. My conclusion was to let BB's be BB's (how's that for alliteration) and enjoy them for what they are.
I don't say this to discourage you. Everyone's equipment and approach is different, and you may reach a different conclusion than I did. If everyone accepted the conventional wisdom then this forum wouldn't even exist. Even if you arrive at the same place I did, it will be fun getting there - which is the whole point. |

Yes, that is the point. Having fun experimenting. |
