This Walther LGR recently came to visit. It's on loan for a couple of weeks to chronograph.

From what I have read, the LGR was the dominant gun for international 10m competition in the 1970's and 1980's. It is a side lever, single stroke pneumatic design. It shoots about 530 FPS. At 10m it just keeps shoving pellets down the same little hole. At 25 yards it does the same thing, but the (single) hole is a bit bigger.

I am under orders to not modify it in any way, and the owner has enlisted both the wife and daughter to enforce that. Still, I am learning a lot that can be employed later in my own projects - things like how the grip is shaped, what "real" stippling looks like, and how a competition trigger feels.

It's way out of my league, but fun for a couple of weeks. Achtung! Der monkeytinkering mit der luft gewehr ist verbotten.

Beautiful gun Slavia!

Yes the LGR supplanted the FWB 300 sliding block as the dominant rifle in world cup competition. It's still used today by a number of shooters and does reasonably well.

I'm totally envious. Vintage masterpieces like that never appear on the canadian market.

If you get a chance could you post a picture of the loading port and breech block?

To load, you lift the tab on the right:

The trap hinges up and forward, exposing the breech:

The trap has PTFE seals at either end:

A nice feature is a variable geometry cocking arm. Kind of like a two-stage trigger in reverse - the lever "shifts gears" at the end of the stroke for more mechanical advantage:

The trigger is fairly simple, but beautifully smooth and with a clear transition into stage two. It is adjustable for reach, cant, stage two discharge point, weight, and slack going into stage one:

The design is a single-stroke pneumatic, so no spring recoil. The valve is held open with a cam when the "hammer" wedges into it, so no valve bounce:

Wow great drawings!!. While the trigger looks interesting, I see two adjustments I would have left out of it. It has 3 adjustments right? Too much adjustment makes me wonder about it going out of adjustment when you don't need it too.

Otherwise great looking gun and design.

The diagrams are straight from the manual.

very very cool

I wonder how hard it would be to apply that variable geometry to your average pumper?

Dare I ask what such an animal sells for in the used market?

I would like to point out that when you look at the availability of the Walther LGR in comparison to the FWB300 nowadays, you would be surprised of the manufacturer who did the dominating. In terms of numbers that is. The Walther must have been more desirable though, because of the SSP design, though I don't think that they are more or less accurate then one another. Yes, I am saying that I don't believe one is that much or at all better then the other. I think they stopped producing the FWB300 in the early 90's.

Very Happy

Slavia,

Nice rifle. I wish I owned it... wait a minute...
I DO OWN IT ! Mr. Green Yippee!

Nice report. Velocity of 530fps? That's a bit under the typical 570fps for these ssps, but, if it's single-hole accurate, who really cares?

The ugly stock will be refinished with a brown "stain", but I'll take care of that.

It will be on its way to the beer and cheese homeland this weekend. I'm happy to have had the opportunity to try it out - mostly because I am able to more fully appreciate what I've got. My Slavia would never win Olympic matches, but when compared to the LGR it isn't too far off the mark. That was a good lesson to learn.

I don't see them very often up for sale but about 500 for an okay specimen and about 300 for an action

Decided to look this thing up a bit- just seeing as how we had a price ballpark. Seems the unit shown is an 'LGR' but in an 'LGV' stock?
