I had this debate earlier on today with my friend and I need good points to beat him in this conversation.
He was saying civilians in this country shouldn't have guns because of instances like school massacre or any other crimes. He was saying that country like Japan has very low crime rate since they totally banned the personal gun usage. It's not only Japan but also many countries in the world totally ban the personal gun usage and still have a safe society.
I was telling him there has been many studies showing how possessing guns by individuals has decreased the crime rate, but my friend was like that statistics was recorded like 40 years ago and the decreasing crime rate was a trend all over the world not only in US. Regardless of the possessing gun law the crime rate would have decreased as the world was getting better.
How can I possibly beat him in this argument?

That one is easy

Japan has been accused of grossly under reporting domestic crime for 50 years and over reporting foreign crime for its own internal political agenda.

Independent estimates put it on par with all the other developed industrials

"To understand Japan you first need to understand what it means to be Japanese"

Lots of information to be had using google on Japans unusual crime stats

SMP is right. Also you can put it this way for openers, and here are a couple key points. What happens when you ban items,as history has proven? It increases the value, and demand, also the crime rate to obtain the item.A criminal will not care about following the law.So if your friend were to follow,a gun ban law,he is simply a much easier target for crime.A major deterrent to a scum bag is not knowing if your armed or not.Think about what happens when you take that away... Wink

Or you could play this vid for your buddy courtesy of Joe.
If your friend doesn't get it then...well.. Rolling Eyes

You can't. That's why they made it a constitutional right and not a legislative privilege.

^^^That pretty much says it in regard to crime.

It's been proven too many times that a country's crime rate is a cultural thing, not a gun thing.
And slavia is right, few people make important decisions based on facts. Historically, they base decisions on knee-jerk emotional reactions and this is why mankind makes the same costly mistakes over and over again.

(It's not even about crime anyway, its about having the right to be free, IMO.)

I once chatted with my Pastor about the notion that the constitution needs to change with the times. He asserted that the constitution was not written in response to the sensibilities of the times, but rather with regard to human nature - which won't change.

Congressmen (and many others) swear this oath:
I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

5 U.S.C. §3331

To me, if they get to Washington and start talking about sidestepping or changing the constitution then they should be charged with treason.

O.K., stepping off the soapbox now. I'll get back to you when I have formed a firmer opinion.

Over here guns are banned. You can own up to five guns with a permit, but are only allowed to use it on the range, even if you have enough room to shoot it. (It doesn't apply to airguns in any way)

Crime rates in the Netherlands are reasonably low. This has nothing to do with freedom or guns. It has everything to do with the high standards we are living by. High crime rates are often (if not always) localized to densely populated areas in combination with poverty.

Most of the US problems are because of the same reasons that you are allowed to be free. That freedom is payed for with a lot of blood, not just from your own soil, but I expect most well-thinking people are aware of that. You are to blame for your own problems because you're letting it happen. It would, at this moment and in my opinion, be more healthy to decentralize the power in the USA.

And don't get me wrong! I can see your face get red and your fingertips shaking! All this America bashing, when will it stop! Whelp, I am not saying this doesn't apply to any western country.

It applies just as well to the vast majority of North/West-European countries. What I am saying, is that the standards we are living by are the source of what we encounter as problems.

Most of the time we're to busy pointing at something and blaming it, while not actually working on the problem at hand. And a lot of people don't really give a crap.

Our systems are beaten, wrong, and the only people enjoying it are the guys up top laughing their a$$ off at us sprouting our comments on fora, leaving us satisfied with being able to say what we say.

Thank you so much for replying. After reading several replies, I guess crime rates does not have anything to do with gun ownership, perhaps it lies somewhere else. Like "radar" said "a country's crime rate might be a cultural thing."

I don't know how to conclude this... -_-

There are too many conflicts to deal with
"Political arguments of gun politics in the United States center around disagreements that range from the practical – does gun ownership cause or prevent crime? – to the constitutional – how should the Second Amendment be interpreted? – to the ethical – what should the balance be between an individual's right of self-defense through gun ownership and the People's interest in maintaining public safety? Political arguments about gun rights fall into two basic categories, first, does the government have the authority to regulate guns, and second, if it does, is it effective public policy to regulate guns." (from wikipedia)

he is partially right we should never have 1 gun but several ... tell him that . but adolf hitler said in 1939 {i think it was that year ] take all the guns off the streets and germany will be a safer place. we all know where that went . its our second amendment right to own and use guns . Faq-U

Look up international murder rates, and then go to gun politics by country...I think Wikipedia has the latter, and cross check. You'll see.
There has been no discernable rise in violence in states that have loosened gun carry regulations in recent years, and usually a decline.
Where did your friend get that "40 years ago" FBI statistic? Or did he just make that up? Because it's not true.
For every life saved by gun banning, several more are lost because of it. So unless he is in favor of crime and violent death, he should stop being niave. My 2 cents.

What he said

That's right. As said before,if you disarm the law abiding citizenry, you still have armed criminals. It makes their job so much easier...
I have a few friends that are anti-gun,and will argue their views until the cows come home.My opinion....they live in a dream world where everything is peachy, and nothing bad could ever happen....Or my favorite...I'd just call the Police, and they'd come, and save me.....Uh huh..it doesn't work like that. Jerk It
My Dad was a Cop for 30 years, and he's seen a-little of the bad side shall we say.In some situations,if you can't defend yourself, you end up,hurt,or dead,it's that simple.

Most dictators do three things...
1. take away guns
2. take away God and the Bible
3. take over the country and the people

Tell him that when a bad guy comes in to kill people in the restaurant he is eating in, he can hide behind you with the women and children.

Actually, many women carry guns, so he can hide behind you with the frightened children and you will defend him, even if he won't appreciate it.
