I'll start by saying that I'm not a PCP fan.
However, in New Zealand around 14 months ago, our government decided, in their infinite 'wisdom', to require all PCP purchases to require a Fire Arms Licence. Not only that but every single person who, at that time, owned a PCP, had to go and obtain a FAL. (Or give up their gun on the day the law changed).
That includes around 3-4 months of waiting, buying a gun cabinet to firearm specs, attending a 4hr lecture, having the Police come to interview you (and check the cabinet), having the police interview two referees (one family member, one not ).
A full background / criminal record check, too.
Did I mention the $140 fee ??
All of this hassle and inconvienience led to a flurry of people trying to sell off their PCP's in the months leading up to the law change date.
Of course, no-one wanted them.
FAL holders obtained their licences for firearms, so they were not interested in buying a PCP
No-one was going to go out and get a FAL just to buy a PCP.
Those who were in the process of obtaining,or who were considering, a FAL, were doing so to buy a firearm.
The law change did not focus on 'power' or 'magazine capacity' or 'velocity'. This is a tad out of focus with the rest of western civilisation, as my Patriot is as lethal as many a PCP.
And if you are wondering whats really going on here, 3 Police officers were killed ITLOD by PCP's in the 18 odd months leading up to the law change. And 1 more injured. All I believe by FX Typhoons, or the similar Monsoon.
So to sum up- really, it was a rushed, indecisive law change designed to stop would-be crims walking off the street and buying a lethal gun.
But would-be crims don't give a s**t about the law. Anyone with the mind set to kill a cop, will not have handed any gun in after the law change.
And the die hard PCP shooters who obviously aren't crims, get booted in the a$$ with "Either sell your gun, hand it in, or get a FAL" .
And I know from chatting to the local gunshop owners, it's almost not worth importing PCP's anymore.
A lesson on how to kill a popular sport, by the NZ government. Evil or Very Mad

That will stop the crime for sure. No law-abiding, duly-licensed criminal who prefers PCPs to other guns to ply the trade will escape this safety net.
Oh wait...that doesn't make sense. I forgot, its not about crime, but instead cutting the 'nads off the population to try to avert insurrection when they tell you in a few years that all voting has been suspended for your own good.

That's right, radar. Governments do not think how changes will affect law-abiding citizens. They had the nerve to say, just as the law changed "This will not impact on those owners who simply own guns for sport ".
BULLS**T. It directly affected them, in the harshest possible way.
It did not affect the criminals. They don't care.
And to the fella in Jersey, I do feel maybe there, it is justified. How many firearm murders are there in the states each year ? about 13,000 ?
In NZ we are lucky to see 1. Not 1000, just the one.

There are a lit of factors that affect murder and crime rates. Culture is a huge part of it. Personally I don't care if I got murdered with use of a gun or some other means. Dead is dead. The violent crime rate does tend to stay steady or go down in states here that have made it a law that the state must issue concealed carry permits unless they have good reason not to.
It has nothing to do with crime and "they" know it. They are lying to you as to their motives.

IMO most arms related laws generated & effected by politicians are either knee-jerk reactions to a stimulus, a way to suppress individuals rights, or a way to make some coin. They are usually thought out with the intention to collect revenue from the public.
If a person truly wishes to kill someone, an air rifle or firearm is only one tool that can be used to that end. They can set them on fire, stab them, drown them, poison them, chop them, the list of ways to commit murder is literally endless. A person can even commit murder with an ordinary drinking straw. (Yeah thats right, I said a straw, and I mean it)
Short story shorter, there are not enough true governments in the world that listen to what their populations need. They're mostly comprised of a bunch of jack@$$#0!3 politicians whose primary interest is in lining their own pockets, at the expense of the population.

Agreed, radar. Dead is dead. And this is why the air gunning community here is so pi**ed off about it. As discussed above, there are endless ways to kill a person. What is going to happen in this country when a Police officer is stabbed to death ?? I'll be f***ed if I'm ditching my hunting blades or registering them.
All this move by the NZ 'Government' has done, is fuel the black-market.
And most likely the crim's who would have normally aquired a PCP as their gun of choice, will turn to the black market - and aquire a powder-burner, instead.

As for the culture, and other factors affecting the crime rate, yes there are many variables. My point was to highlight the stupidity of the new law Shocked

Right about the black market, NZ. They can't even keep dope under control. Alchohol prohibition was a disaster, too. They're just gonna tax you to death to pay for the share the rich guys get out of paying because they have accountants that find the tax loopholes.

Crime? Heck I live in a sea of guns...never been shot at. I got a gun in my pocket right now. Maybe that's why!
