| Hello to all on the forum. New here and was hoping for some help. I purchased a Gamo Big Cat 1200 in .177 for my 12yr old son this Christmas. He loves the gun shooting it every day. The issue I have noticed is that the accuracy seems to fall off very quickly requiring us to clean it often. I realize that the pellets we are using are not the best ( Crosman HPs from wally world) and are very dirty. I was looking for some info on what pellets others are shooting from their Big Cats with the best results without having to spend countless hours and lots of extra money. I am making my son save his money to purchase the pellets for himself instead of me giving him everything so he can learn about the cost of his hobbies. Please if anyone has any help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Tray |

Was it always this way? That is, did the need for frequent cleaning just kind of start, and does the cleaning really put it back right?

Those pellets aren't necessarily dirty, but they have a fine coating of powdered graphite.
I wont go as far to say that its not the pellets, but there may be something else amiss here. Scope creep, screws not coming lose, barrel lock up issues, etc could all be issues. Does the barrel cleaning always bring back accuracy? My problem with CHP's is that 3 or so pellets would stack, then get a ton of fliers to then stack 2 or 3. I just ditched the pellets... |

That would be my question. Is there a whisp of smoke when you shoot? Could be excess lubricant that is burning under compression. A barrel really shouldn't need cleaning all that often. If cleaning the bore doesn't solve it then twalter is correct - look at screw tightness, etc. Blue Loctite is a wonder.
Remember also that a springer could take 500-1000 rounds to break in and have the groups settle into a pattern. Many guns exhibit a preference for pellets, and sampler packs are available.
I'm happy that your son is enjoying the gun. Look through the target section of this forum for target ideas to hold his interest. Work with him to achieve the lightest hold possible while maintaining control (the so-called "artillery hold"). There is a lot of movement/vibration inside there, and the best way to promote consistency is to hold it lightly and let it rock.
