Basically- I want to find the cheapest route to a (preferably semi automatic) reliable, accurate, and high velocity rifle.
I want it to be high velocity (I'm aware of physics, heavier rounds go slower, are more accurate, and have more punch through small layers of material) because something about the fastest shot to my target is appealing to me. I'm an IPSC style shooter. Which brings me to my next point- a more modern look and versatile features (lightweight, easier loading, faster cyclic rate) are all big bonuses.
Accuracy at range is a concern. I am looking for a 2 by 2ft grouping at 300ft, 5 by 5 inch groupings at 150ft, and 350ft+ shots with loping. Is this reasonable at any normal price?
I am willing to sacrfice external features. I am aware of cost efficiency, so reliability and low cost are big pluses.
I am willing to upgrade- which brings me to my next question. What are all the parts in a semi-automatic or spring/pump pellet gun? And what do they do? Or are all different systems proprietary, with little hope of upgrading? Thanks.
FYI- I hope to keep costs down by having a gun with good internals but bad externals (aka lightweight polymer). I'm not sure how much airguns vary in price due to externals- but I know in airsoft (my resident sport) they matter quite a bit. You can pay $350 for a gun with worse internals then a $150 gun, as long as it is 15LBs instead of 6, and has little to no creaking.
Edit: no help so far?... |

The accuracy requirement should be no issue, except for the fact that pellet accuracy goes down the tubes as the speed of sound is approached.
Modding airguns is done all the time, often even without access to machine shop...depending on what you are trying to do. I think they have more potential than firearms in this regard. Semi-auto conversion would be a complicated undertaking though, and I would stick to converting a bolt action single shot to a repeater, or just buying it that way.
My 2 cents |

Thanks- seems like a nice forum. I intend to shoot targets- I eat meat but I don't eat veal (but that's the only thing I don't eat because of how they treat them) and I don't hunt anything I wouldn't eat (AKA most land animals). I don't know how well the forum will respond to this, but hey, I'm sure some people won't mind me not eating veal XD)
So, with that being said, targets (hence IPSC style shooting). I liked the look of the daystate rifle that popped up when I opened the webpage that said panther on the side- but then all the other rifles were wood. I prefer chrome>black>camo>wood.
So modification isn't like airsoft where they make aftermarket parts that are basically cross-compatible with every notable brand?
I don't intend to make a conversion to semi-automatic. I intend to buy a semi-automatic gun if possible.
I guess my goals are too extensive for my price range- which I'd rather not mention because in my expierence, if you say up to $200 or something... People say only things that are at the very top of the price range, and don't mention any viable options for say, $100; and worst of all, if there is an amazing rifle for say... $210, that would outperform any $200 rifle- there is a good chance of it not even being mentioned.
If I do have a budget- it's not because that's all I have, it's because that's all I want to spend on a particular hobby. I spend $3,000-$4,000 yearly on airsoft and make $3,500-$4,500 or so working on guns, so that ends up taking hundreds of hours yearly for little end pay. I can't afford to put as much money into other hobbies, because then I'd have to work more, or at least not have as much to put into savings.
I will tell you though- $700 is certainly NOT my budget. I would like near perfect accuracy at 50ft, as that would be any competition I set up with my friends. 5 by 5 inch targets at 50ft are harder then it sounds to hit at rates of 2+/sec. I might sway off to the side of the target or something (which wouldn't be a problem if my groupings were a half inch, but could if they were 3 inches).
Keep up with the ideas- I really appreciate them. |

You will not buy a semi auto for $200 and what you require to shoot 2+/sec would be a fully automatic which will not be cheap. It is easy to auto feed BBs but difficult to do the same with pellets, in fact harder than cartridge loading powder burners.
Most decent air guns will shoot hole on hole at 50 ft and a good rifle will do a 1" group at 50m. but then your getting into the 6-800$ range.
