There are a lot of special forums for Chinese airguns and they all talk about B- this and SKM that.
Can anyone give me a quick overview of Chinese airguns? Who makes what, what are their general characteristic? What about my Remington Vantage with the Chinese Benjamin trigger? I know its Chinese, but what other brands might be the same inside?
Thanks! |

There are a ton of Chinese manufacturers - Norinco, Snowpeak, Shanghai, BAM, Huadong, et. al. Then make it a little more complicated by using confusing model numbers. The English version of the Chinese word for rifle starts with the letter "B," and carbine (short rifle) comes out "QB." So rifle model three from Shanghai might not be the same product as rifle model three from BAM.
But then again, it might be the same. Most of those factories were recently government-owned. They produced designs prescribed by the government, rather than innovate - so there are a bunch of underlever sliding-cylinder B3's, all the same with slight variations.
Confused yet? Because there is more. So far I have only mentioned the manufacturers, and not the distributors. Throw names like Xisico (U.S.) and SMK (U.K.) into the mix. Then make up model names like "Sea Lion" or "Hercules" to make things interesting.
Then there is cloning ad re-branding. For example, if you were a Chinese manufacturer you could copy a Gamo 440 and call it a B18. Then you could make a deal to sell them in the U.S. under the Crosman name. Except the name "B18" would be boring, so let's switch the stocks and sights around and call them the Phantom, Quest, G1, Storm, etc.
Look at the break-barrel parts lists on the Crosman website - the compression tube part numbers often start with B18. Then look at the compatability lists for the GRT and GTX triggers - lots of guns have the same triggers.
This is not to say that Chinese airguns are junk. Some are good, and some are bad. What they do even better than making airguns is to confuse Westerners.
The Western world has Kalashnikov, Simonov, Stoner, Browning, and Barrett. Add to that list the famous Chinese designer Sam Ting - because all the guns look like the sam ting.
Clear? |

Clear as mud, but it does help, and was pretty much the answer I was looking for--so thank you very much.
Eventually, I suppose, I will get to be conversant in the most common engineering patterns. |
