Hi All,
I am new to this forum, and just getting back into shooting with my Grandson who lives with my wife and I. I just picked up what looked like a really good deal which was two break barrel Daisy's with ammo and glasses and other stuff for 164 bucks. We are going to have some fun plinking.
I am not new to shooting, as I started at around 8 years old myself with my father, and shot expert in the military with the M16.
I started looking around on the web and came across some videos of night shooting rats with a night vision scope and it really looks like a blast.
Looking up the cost of the setup the guy was using I was thrown into shock at finding out the airgun he was using cost $1600.00 and that did not include any of the night optics which will obviously be a pretty penney also.
Now considering the fact that a really decent semi-auto rim fire .22 long rifle can be had for about 2/10 of the cost of the above mentioned airgun, where is the sense in going with air power??? Its been a while but 22 long rifle carts cant be all that expensive, and who wants to pump?
Or are we just talking legal issues forcing the gun of choice? |

| The way I see it is that yeah, sometimes it's legal simplification depending on the country or state/province. But for me, I like shooting in my backyard or otherwise in the city (which is also illegal many places) I like the relative quietness and the love of the mechanism of man-powered weapons. Nobody gets into serious adult air-gunning to save money. |

Air-gunning is a sport, like any other. You can get an entry level rifle/scope for about $100, or spend $300 and get a very good airgun/scope setup... as well you could spend $1600, or even $5000 for a specialized rig. The point is you don't need to get extravagant. The advantages are they are quiet, suitable for short range shooting, easily maintained, inexpensive ammunition, to name a few. Actually, there are very few airguns that retail over $1000. The forum will help you choose suitable rig |

| LIke Dukemeister said. It's a sport. There is a self-imposed challenge to it, like bowhunting. You can easily spend $1500 on a bow, too, by the way. But you don't need to spend anywhere near that to get started. |

| I agree. I have 4 rifles with the most expensive one being about 209 bucks. It's a totally custom CO2 rifle. Crosman is cool like dat. lol Anyway, I can shoot any of my rifles in my basement without worrying about ricochets or scaring my wife and kids to death. I like shooting anything, but this is easier and cheaper. Most people have a long enough basement for a 10 meter range, and that's the distance we compete here with rifles, and 5 m for pistols. It's just some relatively cheap fun. |

Thanks to all of you for the great answers. By the way, I have been looking at the Benjamin Discovery PCP which Walmart has a really great deal on for the gun with HP pump. Anyone own one of these?I think it is actually made in the USA too, which I really like. We have to start stubbornly supporting Made in USA if we are to turn this economy around. It cannot be done by creating more taxpayer paid for govt jobs, that just adds to the load.
God Bless all you red blooded Americans

| A lot of "American-made" products are made from Chinese/foreign parts. Just a thought |

I started a discussion on another forum about Chinese made products. You often have to examine the packaging on an item to learn just where it was manufactured or assembled. Sometimes I discover that what I thought was "American Made" was actually assembled in Taiwan or China but the packaging was printed in the USA.
The advice you've been given so far is sound. Depending on the state, province or country that you live in there may be different laws that affect what type of airgun or firearm you are allowed to own and where you can use it. Typically airguns can be bought and used by anybody without a great deal of government paperwork.
So you've already purchased your rifles. Exactly what did you buy? Maybe we can recommend some pistols that you can have some fun with without breaking the bank.
Why don't you buy some spinning targets for you & the grandson to shoot at.

Yes I believe it is actually made in USA. I do not have one, but am strongly thinking about it. They almost always get very good reviews. You can look on Youtube, Airgunweb, and others for videos of operation and testing. These are good places to look at any airgun before buying.
Also can read the customer reviews on anything at PyramydAir.com Pyramyd air has been very good for me. Lots of selection, fast, fast, shipping anf outstanding customer service and support. Not an advertisment, but since you are new, you might want to know this supplier.
Now that I have one PCP type, a big bore .45, I think a .22 caliber "little sister" would be nice as they can share a pump. |

| rsterne showed me a very inexpensive trick to really kick up the power from a Disco. Should you go that route, just ask if you're interested. But even if not, just know my .22 Disco has yet to let me down, especially in the accuracy department |

I think that there will be a lot of people interested in any tricks you may have regarding the Discovery. Frankly, I think I am going to save up for a rifle that is more than a single shot. A repeating rifle seems to go hand in hand with the ability to shoot more than once on a charge.
BTW I really like the rotating targets |

I found some easy mods for the hammer spring preload.
Ya, a magazine would be cool. Mostly I'm interested in the recoil...or lack of it, as I shoot better with a pumper than a springer. |
