Good afternoon everyone, great to be part of the forums. Please bare with me as I am totally new to air guns.

I am a big game hunter here in the NE and need an air gun pistol which is good for pest control, such as crows, mice, etc. I have been all over the internet and am more confused than ever. As such, I thought that I would check with the pros for some recommendations. I would like something small, quiet and powerful, but am not sure if such a thing is available. I will also be plinking cans!

Please let me know if you need more info from me.

Thanks!!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

There are a few really obvious choices that would fit your requirements and allow you a lot of freedom to modify to suit your own tastes and needs

The Crosman 2240 if you want the ease of CO2
You can modify to suit or you can pre order the custom build of your choice from crosman

Crosman 1377 especially if you like to tinker a bit makes an excellent varmint control pistol.

Welcome to the Forum!

You may want to look at the Crosman Nitro Venom Dusk. It is lightweight, accurate and fairly quiet. It is great for Pests, and the cans!

Thanks for the info. I found the Crosman to be a bit too large.

Quick question, is it better to have the CO2 or a pump? Also, is there a limit on the amount of time you can keep a CO2 cartridge in a pistol before it will cause damage. For example, if I have a CO2 cartridge in the gun overnight, is that ok?

Thanks.

Yes over night is fine....actually I have one in the basement for the various critter control that has a charged CO2 in it perpetually

As for which is better there is no real answer for that. Which is better for you. CO2 is easy, but very temperature limited. 55F is about the absolute low limit. Below that and the CO2 will supercool as you shoot and you'll only get 5 or 6 shots.

Yes the crosmans are on the larger size but they almost have to be to be accurate and powerful enough for any varminting. The velocity of the pellet is very dependent on barrel length.

The 2240 handles like a short barrel Luger.

I have 6 pistols and I think for you a daisy 617x. It's a CO2 and it's not a cold weather gun, but it will shoot both pellets and BBs. Pellets are more accurate too. But there again it's not a cold weather gun. SOme of the benjamin pump pistols may be right up your alley. Here are some very good pistols.

I have this one personally: http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Magnum_Research_Baby_Desert_Eagle_BB_gun_kit/2146

It is a very good pistol for the money. Accurate and easy to keep loaded. It's BB only so it's not as accurate as it could be. I like it though. It's also cheaper at walmart than it is here.

I have both the 2240 and 1377, and SMP is 100% correct.
