| I personally love Hunting Squirrels with Air Rifles. They are smart, and pretty hard to hunt. I have always loved challenges. |

I think part of the problem is what is "game" and what are "pests".... I know there is a crossover for things like squirrels, which can be both.... but generally, I think of game as something I shoot to eat.... while pests (varmints) are something destructive that are killed to protect property in some way....
My favourite "pest" are Crows because they are so darn hard to get.... after the first one, anyway.... If I had them around here in numbers, I would probably answer "gophers" (ie ground squirrels) because I used to enjoy that a lot further north.... Squirrels here are protected....

| Squirrels are protected?!?!?! What in the world is bringing the numbers down enough to have to protect them from hunters? Let me know so I can import it here! lol |

Our native squirrels are the Douglas (Red) squirrel, and there is no open season for them.... that means you can't hunt or kill them, although I think possibly a trapper's licence like you can get for Beaver might allow it.... There is an invasive species of squirrel (Eastern or Fox squirrel) that are grey or black in colour that can be hunted or killed at any time, but they (so far) are only in the lower mainland (Vancouver and suburbs) and on Vancouver Island.... They are much larger, and quickly take over the Red squirrel's territory, so they are fair game.... AFAIK, there are none within 75-100 miles of here....

Have no fear Bob
We have both versions of squirrel in eastern Ontario and the little reds beat the crap out the larger blacks and greys. |
