We in the UK now have the right to kill burglars or anyone entering your property to do you harm.

A while ago a farmer living in an isolated farm house was plagued with trespassers and thieves, so he used to sit on the stairs at night with a shot gun, one night two burglars entered the farm intending to steal anything they found, the farmer blew the first one off the stairs and killed him the other ran away.

The farmer got sent to prison but was released after a petition was got up supporting what he had done, now the Home Secretary ( The top government lawyer) has said no one will go to prison for defending his property even it the trespasser is killed.

The only thing is you have to stab him or her in the front not the back, so if you chase him down the road you must overtake him and stab him in the chest.

So it open season on burglars in the UK now.

So far this year it’s three dead by knifing and one with a baseball bat.

Happy Days!!! Mr. Green

Al

Hopefully puts a bit of a damper on crime!

It's almost surprising this sort of thing has taken as long as it has- with all this concern with "security" the last 10 years, you would almost have expected this to have come out sooner.

For many years you could only use “reasonable” force to defend yourself, and many people were sent to jail for manslaughter because they hit the burglar to hard and killed him.

And as you say it took many, many years of argument to get the courts to accept that an ordinary house owner did not know how hard to hit someone to knock them out, and they were frightened of using to much force in case they killed the burglar.

So now it has been decided that you can use any amount of force to neutralise the attacker. Someone has at last seen the light and ignored the human rights crowd.

Our castle doctrine laws vary from state to state. Here in Indiana you can shoot to kill from anywhere on your porperty if you feel your life or some one elses life is at risk. The last time I read Illinois castle doctrine laws you could only shoot from inside the home and not from a porch or garage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_doctrine

It changed here too, finally. We're not allowed to own guns, but we are allowed to "defend" ourselves against burglars. I have plenty of crap laying around I can smack someone unholy in the face with. Razz

That makes a lot of sense. If someone enetrs your home to steal your belongings, and possibly physically assault you, You should have the right to defend yourself. Maybe not by blowing them off of the steps with a Shotgun!, but with a Pistol of something in smaller Caliber.

I know I wouldnt want to clean Blood Splatter off of my walls! Laughing

I hope you are joking about not using a shotgun (my anti-theft device of choice). Smile

Pistols are banned here so it's between a knife and a shotgun, it makes the choice simpler. Smile

here in minnesota, usa the only way you can defend your home is if the intruder has a gun
but we are trying to change that after several home invasion homicides

I put two duct tape squares on the floor 10m apart. I stand on one, and then all I have to do is convince the burglar to stand on the other.

Which essentially means "O.K., Mr. burglar, the law requires me to leave now so you can be alone to take all my stuff. Your career choice is protected by law." A few years ago when the "shall issue" carry permit law went into effect the naysayers were predicting things like "wild west" shootouts in the public library. The exact same arguments are being resurrected against "castle doctrine" laws.

I go to the library a lot, and I'm still waiting for the "High Noon" scenario to happen. It probably won't happen, since the crime rate has been on a steady decline since the carry law went into effect (after years of increase).
