I'm new here. I have a late 1970s FWB 124 in 177 cal. My best groups are from Beeman Silver Jet pellets. I was told the velocity was 800 fps, so believe it to be around 750 with this old gun. The advice I need is a good hunting sight in zero range. Nothing larger than Gray Squirrles is expected to be shot with it, and the bulk of its use will be for small varmint hunting at our retirement property in the mountains of NE Washington. Absolute maximum range would be about 60 yards. Most under 40. For a 1.0" radius kill zone, what range would you suggest I zero at. (I know, I can explore this myself by shooting up a bunch of pellets, but I'd like an educated place to start) Steve   Posted: Sun May 15, 2011 7:04 pm sniper Silver Status Member Joined: 28 Nov 2008 Posts: 3752 Location: Star, Idaho Welcome to the forum. Sighting in at 10 yards will have you back on around 35 yards. pre/post 35 yards is a matter of learning holdover/under. This is where mil-dot scopes come in handy. Downloading HAWKE CHAIRGUN will help tremendously. rsterne will be around for a detailed analysis. Using 750 fps with a Beeman Silver Jet (BC= 0.013) and a 2.0" diameter kill zone and assuming a scope set 1.5" above the bore.... ChairGun recommends 38 yards.... which gives a near zero of 10 yards.... The pellet would strike 1" low at 3 yards, be 1" high at 24 yards, and 1" low at 43 yards.... At 50 yards you would be 3" low, and at your 60 yard maximum it would be about 7" low.... HTHs.... HTH's Thanks, Due to the size of my intended (Expected) targets, I may have to go to a smaller target diameter. No Military Dot retical, but I do have a post & crosshair that I can scale to. I should be able to estimate range close enough that my field shooting position would allow a shot. Just takes practice This should get me in the ballpark. The accuracy with this scope is excellent as long as you take the time to get the AO correct. If you don't take the time to get the AO correct you will miss... I've been popping ground squirrels from 10-60 yards sometimes 30+ an hour and I have made several really long downhill shots up to 100+ yards with a .177 springer. I have a Leupold Scope with a mildot reticle mounted on my 22-250. Made some pretty long shots with it. I'm sold on the concept.
