I read a lot that new guns need to be broken in. That they will get quieter and more accurate. Why is this? What are the physical changes a gun goes through to make this happen? Does anyone think this is something of a myth?

Yeah, there is truth to it. One of the problems is there is a ton of machining oils inside of it. The barrel usually needs to be deburred by pellets going through it, and the seal needs to mate with the inside of the compression tube. Lead is actually a metallic lubricant and the pellets leave a small deposit on the inside of the barrel. All in all it takes anywhere from a hundred to five hundred shots before they are as accurate as they can get. Don't clean the barrel either unless you are starting to have accuracy problems and then don't expect to have it settle back down until 20 to 30 shots. Only use windex or 409 to clean the barrel. You don't want to use any petroleum products to clean the barrel. One thing you can do is to clean the barrel completely when you first get the rifle and that will make the dieseling not last as long.

Hope this helps!!
