(Rifle-Weirhauch HW77/Hawke 4.5x14-40 scope) I have been shooting JBS Diabolo Exact 8.4 gr. 4.5mm in this rifle since new and most groups were no larger than 1.5" at 30 meters. Some groups were less than 3/4". I just received a few tins of various pellets from PA so today I tried some H&N Baracuda Match 10.65 gr. 4.52mm round nose. The POI changed 2" left and 5" low at 30 yards. Next I tried some H&N Field Target Trophy 8.64 gr. 4.5mm domed. These were grouping approximately 2" right and 2" low (and I use the term "group" loosely). At 30 meters am I seeing the characteristics of the various pellets or do I have something else contributing to the change in POI? Also, is 30 meters with a springer pushing the limits of it accuracy? I was thinking about taking the scope off and putting the rear iron sight back on to rule out scope issues. Any thoughts and information would be greatly appreciated.

I have found that different pellets not only group differently, but also have different P.O.I.'s - different in altitude and azimuth. You will also notice that the intermediate weight pellet drops some, and the heaviest pellet drops most compared to the lightest pellet (which you are using as a reference point).

Accuracy is relative. A gun's power and accuracy might limit it to 30 meters for killing squirrels, but it may still be adequate for killing pop cans at 50 and beyond. It depends on what you want to hit and how much kinetic energy you need once the pellet gets there.

So I guess the bottom line must be to find a pellet with the tightest group and stay with it. I've been shooting my IZH 46H with several types of pellets and I can't tell much difference in the four I have tried. But, shooting distance is much less and the different pellets I tried weight the same. I have seen the light! Well, at least the first one...
Thanks Slavia

When you shoot groups to compare pellets, do so at different ranges. What works best at 10m in the basement might not be best at 30m in the wind.

That's exactly where I was today, outside with wind gusts and trying different pellet shapes and weights. I am used to the properties of powder burners (1911 pistols) that have nearly the same POI at 25'-50' bullseye distances. When the wind dies down I will go back out and try again to establish some base line for the different pellets. From what I observed today lighter & domed is better.

Hi Stu,
I have the same problem with wind in my area too as it's most generally breezy which doesn't help to get too necessarily get repeatable patterns. Of course if the wind is blow at a fairly constant pace the all should be the same if your making corrections using your Mil-Dots for each shot.

But if your area is at all like mine it's often just small sporatic gusts that vary in wind speed.

Two days ago I was shooting from my San Angelo bench rest at a target distance of about 105' and I decided to try some RSW Super points and my shots were extremely to the Left on two of them. I had a target stand set up along side of and to the front of a small metal, Aluminum building and the first two of my shots went right through the fairly tough siding like nothing with a entrance hole of .208 in size, so thinking it could have been the different pellets I switched back to the Crosman semi-pointed Hunters I was using and the next shot missed the target too but I didn't hear it hit the building like before so I figured it went betwee the building and target edge somewhere. Then yesterday I again went out to do some shooting again and as I was setting up the free standing target in it base I noticed that in the first stiffening rib on the side of the building, a 1.5" U that protruded outside the wall there was a hole that must have been created by the third shot using the Crosman Hunter.

It too had an entrance hole of .208 but the an exit hole of .311 and the exit hole was almost clean punched. So that told me the Benhamin shoots with considerable force

Anyway I determined it must be the fact my scope lost zero and things were floating around fairly freely as I couldn't get any consistency. So as I told Snipper I'm looking at either a Leapers or a Center Point 4-16 x 56 if either is shock resistant?

Oh, it seemed as though as I was getting the better results with the semi-pointed Hunters from crosmnan

Lets compare notes.
