My Grandson was down the other day and he brought his BB gun with him, so I made a target out of a piece of Plasticine so that the BB’s would stick to it.

After he had gone home I shot the BB’s out of the Plasticine with an air rifle and found it a handy target if you miss a BB then it leaves a holt and if you hit one it disappears, and when you have finished you just roll it up flatten it out and press some BB’s into it and start all over again

And , it has me thinking/ wondering.

At what distance ? will you be shooting this?
and , what distance do you normally shoot?

The boy and I are new to airguns, and I did do some research online.
And we started with a 10 and 20 meter range. (10 and 20 yards actually, then I updated a few feet to make it meters)

The boy is sighted in at the 10 meter mark, as he" likes it " because he can hit the "spinners"
I am sighted in at 20.

My airgun is still "under" 500 shots, and the boy is on his second can of 500.
So , from what ive read, the barrels arent broken in yet.

The reason I am asking all this, is because, I dont think I could hit those BB's , no matter what the range is.

But, that would be my goal, to be that accurate.

Also, do you use a rest more often than not?
Because, we were solely using a rest, until we tried that last target competition here, and we cant seem to hit crud, while standing without support.
So, we are practicing standing , unsupported , shots now.
and throw in the fact that we are new, we are obviously still working on the "Artillary hold".

And seeings how I'm on the subject of accuracy, and target shooting,
I started with a scope, on account of my eyes not being that great anymore, so, are you using a scope for your target shooting , or open sights?

Well, I guess Ive rambled on , and better give it a break for now.
I hope these questions are OK for posting here.
I just wanted to direct them at you.

Hi, The BB target I was shooting at 20m using a 3-9x40 scope and rest, the thing is change the range to suit your capabilities, the BB target would be very difficult at anything more than 5m using iron sights.

I normally shoot anywhere between 10 and 30m for rifles and 5 to 20m for pistols. All my rifles and pistols are sighted in at 20m because that is the length of my range in my back garden, although I can extend it to 25m by moving a few things. Also if the lad likes shooting at 10m so he can hit the target then that all that matters, if he increases the range and hit’s nothing he will soon get fed up.

Anywhere between 500 and a 1000 pellets should sort a new barrel out, but don’t clean it unless the pellets start to go off target, some of my guns have shot 20,000 pellets and are still shooting ok.

As for hitting the BB’s using anything but a scope would be difficult but you could try 5m and see how you go on, use a rest first then try sitting or kneeling. Look up Field Target shooting and see how they shoot without using a fixed rest.

I use a rest when in the garden but field target shooting positions when hunting, unless the is a handy bail of straw handy. Smile

Depending which gun I use for target shooting it could be scope, peep sight, red dot or iron sight.

Golf tees pressed into the plasticine might be fun, too. You could either shoot at the pointy end to drive them out, or shoot at the head to drive them in.

There is always a BIG difference between benchrest and standing on a springer. Now if you want to shoot and have your shot either way, you can buy a CO2 gun, which is useless below 50 degrees,( I use mine for starlings and crows in the spring summer and fall) or you can buy a single stroke pneumatic like a daisy 880, or a powerline 953. They are not crosman, which I am very partial to, but they shoot well for the money. THere is also the 843, but I don't have any personal experience.

Just keep shooting and sooner rather than later you will get the hang of it. It took me about a month to get it down well. Good luck!!

We've been practicing, and it is getting better.

And Slavia, I just dug out a dusty B3, from the garage.
But I should post questions on that , in the rifle forum, I bet.
