Air guns are defined as a firearm that uses spring or compressed air (not gunpowder) to prepel a single projectile that is .17 caliber or larger and produces a muzzle velozity of at least 600 feet per second. Smooth or rifled bore air guns are allowed. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8312.html Air guns may be used to hunt squirrels, rabbits, hares, ruffed grouse, and furbearers that may be hunted (e.g., raccoons and coyotes) and unprotected species. I don't really know, I would guess people hunt large game with an airgun simply for the additional challenge of it, but I have no idea. I'm just happy its legal to hunt small game in NY. In the past you could only kill animals that where considered pests with an airgun. Anytime, no limit, small game licence. Now I just have to find out where they are. Their not up by me. Indiana is one of the most Gun friendly States despite one of it's Mayors being quite possibly the largest Anti-Gun D-Bag. If I read it correctly, Frank "D-Bag" Lautenberg was the Mayor of Fort Wayne here in Indiana. After reading that I'm glad I didn't move to Fort Wayne. The old NYSDEC website use to list Airguns as a form of firearm but when you asked NYSDEC if it was legal to hunt small game with an airgun, they would say it was illegal. This year it is legal to hunt small game with an air gun. However in Long Island they are airgun friendly. I just put in for a renewal of my concealed pistol license. I've been carrying since 1980.
