| I would think the hum would be one of your fans inside the case. When does it make the sound? Is it only after its been on for a while or whenever you put a new cd in? |

| Clean your case interior, especially the cooling fan blades. (Wipe them clean with a rag, or use canned air intended for use with computers, cameras, etc. Do *not* use a blast of air from a standard air compressor. You can literally blow a fan blade off! You can guess how I know this!) Check for worn bearings in the cooling fans. Check for loose screws, especially those mounting the cooling fans, power supply, and hard drives. Cases vary in construction, but many have tabs of one sort or another involved in holding the sides on. Check to see if any of these can be tightened slightly. |

It's not a fan. I recently cleaned the whole computer, and sporting 7 fans, I didn't have this before. It may be one of the new hard disks. I'm thinking of adding some small rubber layers to the brackets that hold the hard disks.
For some reason it has stopped for the moment. |

It sounds like a hard drive having trouble searching, I have a laptop which does that intermittently but works ok.

| I think you're right. I haven't really payed attention to as to when the humming starts and it seems it is only humming when I'm intensively using the computer. That often means I'm working and put on some (loud) music. |

| Does it make the noise when there is no CD in the drive? Does it make a clicking noise at the same time? |

No clicks, I hardly use DVD's.
It's a fan, but it's hard to figure out which one. It's not one out of the six that are controlled by the fan controller (buttons!!!). |
