For example, sighting devices not attached to an airgun, stands or blinds, etc. Optics   Posted: Fri Feb 01, 2008 10:52 am The outdoorsman Veteran Member Joined: 07 Sep 2007 Posts: 240 Location: Canada what are your prefered optics? scope, red dot, laser sight, open sights and why do you prefer them? i hunt in a forest most of the time so a scope will simply not do so i have been using a laser sight, it makes work a lot easier in the forest and still can be used in a more open area....with limited effectiveness because of its need for shade for the dot to appear. a the red dot from the laser will show up better the darker it gets but it also gets harder to see your prey and at times a scope may come in handy becase of its light gathering effect... i also enjoy the open sights i just feels like a more natural way to hunt. _________________ ' I dont think of the audiance as anything different than me, you have to seduce the audiance ya cant beat'em and ya cant kiss their a$$" Harison Ford   Posted: Fri May 09, 2008 3:32 am broommaster2000 Moderator Joined: 10 Mar 2007 Posts: 5714 Location: City of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands Hm, there are a lot of affordable field target scopes, for different distances, and mil-dot may be usefull too. A lot of these scopes are fine. I use a cheap N2optics now, with a illuminated reticle. Works fine when it's darker. I'm not that much of a hunter, but I recon that it's not that much different from field target, only that the targets may be moving. A powerfull rifle would help as equipment. I also have a laser target designator for close up, inside work. Lasers are harder to work with at longer distances and have to be readjusted for each given distance. It is very hard to estimate hold over/under with such a device. They are very effective for indoor barn ratting though where you are working in an enclosed space. This is what I've found to be true in my situation. Depending where I'm going shooting I will take the quad saves a long walk. Alabama USA when I hunted dumpsters at night for rats I found that the Leapers illuminated scopes worked best, the 6x bug buster because it focuses down to 9' was my choice. Red dots work well, but sometimes you need the magnification for those head shots.
