(The 800X has the nicer grain). What really made the grain come alive in that stock was the three coats of Red Oak (or Mahogany? Can't recall off the top of my head) oil stain. The 500 saw no stain. The original Crosman drab tan/cream/yellowish paint doesn't really make one ooh and aah when they're stacked next to a powder burner. The har part is learning how to lay out a pattern that works. I used a flexible ruler that I bought at walmart for a dollar to make my pattern lines. It was finishing out the edges that I never got good at. I bought three cutters and a handle at midway. a left cutter, a right cutter, and a single row cutter. THe first cut has to be perfect. no ifs ands or buts. Then you use your left and right cutter to go from there. I got a book thru midway that wasnt very expensive either, but right now I am in the process of remodeling and I can't find it.
