About a year ago Alstone and I were going back and forth about adjustable butts with hooks:

After shooting the Mendoza for a few months I came to really like the hook. It wouldn't do for thrashing about in the brush, but for the kind of shooting I do it's great.
I decided that my Slavia 631 needed one, and also that it needed a little more reach between the butt and trigger. A trip to the county recycling center to scrounge a bicycle brake lever also yielded a piece of "T-slot" rail that was the perfect spacer:

Reviewed the other thread, but I am still not clear on the purpose of the hook. The spacing, OK, but is the hook intended to add some form of underarm support- and if so, to what end? |

With the forward hand positioned behind the center of mass, the front of the gun wants to drop (and the butt raise). The hook catches under your shoulder, keeping the butt located in that muscular "pocket" with minimum pressure. You can completely control the gun with just the forward hand and (other) shoulder, leaving the trigger finger, hand, and arm independent to do nothing but control trigger release. You don't really even feel the hook, and that light "artillery hold" is a breeze.
Like I said, for Kanyon out stalking wiley NZ bunnies it would get in the way. For massacreeing cans or killing paper circles it works great.
It's not a new idea:
Nor is it limited to firearms:

Did the same thing to my G1. Now the guns I use the most are all set up similarly:

I went with the bicycle brake levers because they are plentiful. The county recycling center always has older style bicycles with the dropped handlebars (these are the so-called "safety" levers). A motorcycle lever from a junkyard would be more massive, and would have a natural curve.
Have a look at the link posted above. Alston's solution is a bit more elegant than mine. |
