Nothing is new these days you think something is a good idea which someone has thought of, and low and behold there’s one someone else made years ago.
I was in a local pub the other night and noticed a cannon ball about 10” dia laying in the hearth, but what was unique about it was the indentations on the surface, very much like a golf ball. Now I thought the guy who put the dimples in a golf ball was a clever chap but considering that the cannon ball dates back to the 1750s, then there must have been a cleverer chap around then.
It’s amazing what we forget.

Well, looking at the size of that one, he probably didn't need two anyway. |

And heavy too....heard of brass balls, but never iron......
Hey this guys ball even had dimples... I took a trip to Gettysburg PA. a long time ago to see the battlefield, and the museum, and don't recall seeing any cannon balls with dimples for stabilization.....very interesting. You can still find spent ammo etc. on the battle field if you look. |

What makes you think the dimples were for stabilization? They could just be properties from the mold material. |

Very true..the thought did enter my mind, but I've seen a-lot of examples, and never seen one like this...from what I can see the dimples look rather uniform don't you think?Probably wrong here but, maybe the ball was rust pitted, and then cleaned up?Interesting example none the less. |

I was wondering about the possibility of corrosion and subsequent cleaning as well....

It does look rather clean....phosphoric acid, and a wire brush,or something similar.Back in the day I don't think they did anything other than cast, cool, stack, and discharge as needed.... |

The dimples appear to be far too even (despite not being exactly "modern industrial" type consistency) for this to be the result of corrosion. If part of the ball had a bald area, I would tend to think more along those liines.
Is it possible that some batches of balls weren't treated properly when manufactured and surface pock-marks developed when it fired? |

The dimples do appear to have been put on deliberately as they seem to follow a regular pattern.
There’s no shortage of cannon balls in the UK and I have never seen one like this.
