Hello everybody. I allready know that a rifle would be better for this but due to my circumstances I need a pistol to kill chickens quickly. The problem is I am not sure if there is enough power. Do you guys think 700 fps in .17 would do it or are there any suggestions.

What's your FPE? Distance?
Probably better off to hit them in the neck to disrupt the whole spinal column. IIRC in the other chicken thread, the brain stem goes well below the base of the head. |

i think a machete would work better.

if it takes 6 fpe for squirrel i'd think 6fpe
will give you dinner. never shot one myself.
i just eat 'em every week. |

 Interesting this is the second inquiry on dispatching chickens...It's making me hungry again...  Never shot one with an air gun,but no reason why it wouldn't work.Sounds kind of bad..but if the chickens are couped,or you could corner them, you could always grab it by the neck,and snap the bird like a whip.I've never done it but years ago I was a mechanic at a poultry processing plant,and that how they did the occasional one that escaped the processing line. .It seems to me a more humane way than an air pistol,as death is instantaneous,even though nerves will still fire,resulting in flailing for a while etc..However If your air pistol is your only means to do it,I don't see why a good head/vitals shot wouldn't put meat on the table.I was gonna recommend flat out choking the chicken,but I'm sure it would lead to comments from the peanut gallery........ |

fpe isaround 4.2 and distance ould be 20 yards or less.
I guess I'm wondering if this would be enough. Most pistols are not as powerful as the rifles. I havn't bought it yet.
You guys ever hunt with pistols. Like squirrls or rats. |

Rats here,roughly 7 or so fpe,from my 2300KT smacks em down.... 
No Squirrels yet,but I might bag a few depending on my local season/regulations etc. |
