True enough- but nonetheless irrelevant- it is flammable.

On the airgun academy website that Pyramyd runs they say to use 20 weight machine oil. And they have some good tips on how to maintain your airguns.

Eric is right, of course. The flammability is the biggest issue. My RWS 34 does diesel once or twice after I put a drop or two of their proprietory air-chamber oil in it, so I assume the silicone oil is also flammable--at least to some degree. I would not put in synthetic motor oil or any other non-recommended lubricant. Silicone and synthetic are not the same. They just both start with an "S" and the similarity ends there.

Synthetic motor oil comes in 3+ types, and they are usually blended for best overall performance, price, and engine seal compatibility. Most synthetic is just a group III oil which is a highly refined petroleum base stock. The others, groups IV and V (esters and glycols) are more truly synthetic in that they are created molecules, but they are still mostly similar to the petroleum base in behaviors, even if they were pure--which they are not. They also contain anti-foam additives, detergents/dispersants, high pressure anti-wear additives, anti-acid additives, pour point depressents, VI improvers, and a number of other things that may or may not be good for an airgun or its seals. Engine oil manufacturers also change their formulations regularly and without announcement.

(BTW, I wouldn't put Mobil 1 in my engine, let alone an airgun--but that's just from seeing the high iron numbers in so many used oil analyses--That's why I use Valvoline, Castrol or Pennzoil Synthetics. End of story.)

Here's the thing though: Am I wrong or were we originally talking about Crosman Pelgunoil which is for hinges, etc., and not for air chambers or high pressure areas either for high pressure air or spring-piston guns where it could explode? Don't they have a separate product for those applications, or am I mixing up the product names?

I thought we were talking about pellgun oil. At least that's what I was going by. In a chamber you should never use pellgun oil and the chamber lube is the only thing you can use. I don't want to see anyone lose an eye over this. So, are we talking about pellgun oil? lol

Yes you are right. I looked it up here: http://www.crosman.com/gear/care

It is not the same as their silicone air chamber oil.
I have used motor oil on hinges, joints, like that and kept it away from any seals or air chambers. It works fine for that in my experience. I have also read (may or may not be true) that Pellgunoil is similar, if not the same, as automatic transmission fluid. I don't know. I can afford a few drops of the proper Pellgunoil for occasional lubrication. Mr. Green

I don't think I really want to know what SMP is doing with his guns anymore.

"Personal lubricant"

Go back to the beginning of the thread and check out the MSDS - it's motor oil.

"Personal lubricant"

How do you think I get a 0.6" diameter barrel to fit in a piece of 0.5" vinyl tubing?

Slavia, since it's water based, do you have any problems with corrosion?

None that I have noticed - maybe because my application is a tight fit and oxygen doesn't get in much.

In fact, I can't recall any application where there was accelerated rust due to K-Y use.

Well, I hope that there isn't any rust on what the product is designed for. Laughing I wouldn't want to know if that was rusting anyway. CutItOut
