Hey Guys,

I just finished another batch of muzzle brakes and my hands have been hurting with age...

Having the maniacal... I mean the mechanical mind that I do... I knew there had to be an easier way to turn that little crank on my mini lathe tail stock for boring...

So... A good VSR Drill with a clutch and a 9/16" socket works wonders... Just make sure you put a lock washer under the nut on the tail stock handle… I use a 24v 1/2" B&D Firestorm... The battery will last for about 4 hours of contenious production. So I have 2 batteries for it...

You set the clutch on the drill to engage before stalling the lathe motor. (This saves on having to replace the motor protection fuse) Then find the speed on the drill that works best for a smooth consistent cutting.

You will then get a nice long curly queue string of aluminum out of the bore and not bind up the bit as easily…

It also makes for a quick return to zero when running your drill in reverse...

Make sure you have something to rest the drill on so you don’t have to bare the weight of the drill all day…

Now I just have to figure a way my thumb does not get tired after a long day… He, he…

It's madin spin...

Just yesterday.... Looks well used now...

Joe:

Great idea for powering the tailstock spindle!

Another excellent unmentioned innovation are your chip/safety shields. Especially smart is the tool post mounted shield. I assume the shields are made of polycarbonate (Lexan), rather than acrylic, and estimate the thickness at 1/8" (3mm).

Could you post another photo showing how the chuck safety shield is mounted and hinged?

Thank you,

Amigo

They came with the lathe... The tool turret shield pivots off to the right... It's a pain in the a$$ when I have 4 bits mounted... So it got removed & tossed in a drawer. I am installing a hinged lexan shield that drops down from the above cabinet like a visor in your car to keep my eyes safe.

The chuck shield is mounted on a horizonal rod with a safety kill... If it is lifted while the lathe is running... it shuts it down...

The lathe is only a month and a half old... so it is the latest from Harbor...

Yes sir... I chose it over that multi machine thing just for that feature...

I am ordering the extended bed kit from www.littlemachineshop.com to gain 6" of bed... only another $150.00 but worth it...

Joe:
Speaking off those Multi-Machines - Everyone I know or heard of that bought one of those ended up giving it away.
Yes, I think you'll like and make good use of that 6" bed extension provided its solid.
Speaking of Harbor F..., I received this Sat. afternoon the 8" Horiz./Vert. rotary table (47825-0VGA) I ordered a week ago Fri. $199.99 + $11.99 shipping from Camirilo, Calif.
Received an e-mail from ToolsNow a couple weeks ago announcing they were putting their 7 x 12 mini-lathe on sale for $399.99. It's the spittin image of yours, but painted blue. However, it has no chip guards like yours, shown or listed on the spec. page.

A mini-lathe similar to yours is what the big time tuna, Bob Werner, used for all of his work.

Thank You for the Little Machine Shop link. They have that 5C collet chuck for the best price I've seen anywhere. Although I'll also need a D1-4 backplate with a good "register" so I can easily swap it between lathe backplate and rotory table with minimum setup time.

Best Regards,

Amigo

Bob is the best...

If you get it and it has the the cross slide like mine that is drilled and tapped.. Or heck... if you don't mind drilling and taping holes for it... Just e-mail me an address and the tool post guard & hardware is yours...
