Does anyone know the wall thickness of the Marauder air reservoir? I could take mine apart but if someone knows it would save me the trouble. I'm going to build a titanium reservoir for my Marauder. Aside from having a working pressure of 4500 psi and an ultimate burst pressure over 12K, it will cut around 12 ozs from the weight of the gun. I really don't want a 9 pound squirrel rifle.

First of all, using normal safety standards, if the burst pressure is 12K, the safe working pressure would be 3K.... a 4:1 safety margin is standard design criteria for pressure vessels which are under 2" diameter and not subject to regular hydrostatic testing from what I understand....
Secondly, if you are considering using more than 3000 psi fill pressure on an MRod, you also need to look at the strength of the fill plug at the front and how it is attached to the main tube.... and how the valve is located at the back.... Not much sense in building a tube that will stand 4500 psi if you are then in danger of blowing things out the ends of it....
All I'm saying is BE CAREFUL....
Bob
PS - Sorry, but I don't have the dimensions of the MRod tube.... |

Bob,
I have no intention of presurizing above 3000 because of the end caps. I was told by someone who has hydro tested the stock marauder tubes that they are apparently designed around a 2.5 safety factor. That seems way slim to me. They were failing around 7500psi. The numbers get a little fuzzy because they have typical strength values for the alloy and then they have the minimum specs for the ASTM standard. Using barlows formula for estimating burst pressure and plugging in the minimum astm strength factor yields an actual burst pressure of 13700psi and a working pressure at 3X of 3900. I'm perfectly comfortable with a safety factor of 3 for my own use. Using "typical" numbers, the working pressure goes up to 5200 and the burst pressure is 15500. It's all purely academic though, because the only reason I'm going to Ti is to lighten the gun. I'm actually planning on running the gun around 2600 based largely on the numbers you have posted. I'll be more careful with my math now that I know someone is checking Speaking of safety factors, you couldn't pay me enough to build a pressure vessel for anyone, no matter what the safety factor. Too many human factors
thanks

I have two tubes ordered that should be here this week. One is 18" and the other 28. The 18 will be going on my .22, and the 28 on my 25 caliber. The factory tube length is 23". I don't care too much about shot count on the .22. It should get 20 shots on the 18" tube and that will be plenty.
