Discovery tunes or mods?

So, Oddtodd and I hashed out a deal for his discovery. Sent off a money order for it today. Now I'm starting to think about what tunes or mods I can do to it.

Before doing so, I did a search of the forums, where I came upon rsterne (bob's) threads about what he did with his Discovery. With out rehashing everything he said in his threads, I suggest if interested you do a search and read them yourself if you are interested. Very informative and thought out!

Unless I totally missed the point that Bob makes in his thread, I understand that the Discovery is a pretty darn good design as is. Needing only a minor bit of tweaking. The two modifcations I'm most interested in are the heavier hammer spring and power adjuster.

Now it's a matter of where to get these from. Where would I be able to get a heavier hammer spring? Would this be something I could get at a local gunshop/smithe? I found a power adjuster via Airguns of Arizona, so that's not a big issue.

What I'm looking to achieve with my new Discovery? Well, something that will reach out farther then my 2300 for starters. And something that will hit a harder at that extended range. Preferable using heavier pellets while doing so.

And then there's the bling. I know I'll be adding a bipod to the rifle. But since I don't have experience with the any discovery stock or modified, I'm not sure what type of scope I should be looking at. Suggestions?

Thanks,

Jax

The Disco is a darn fine design right out of the box.... 23 FPE and about 30 shots.... basically anything you do to up the power will cost you in number of usable shots.... Rolling Eyes

I'm trying to get AirGunEric to carry the 0.040" wire hammer springs.... They are only necessary (or useful) if you want to pump to 2400 psi.... As far as the velocity adjuster goes, the best way is to drill and tap the end cap to 3/8"-18 NC and make an adjuster from a 1.25" long SS socket head set screw (shouldered) with a thin (jam) nut to lock it.... Eric has one of mine and may be making them now, I don't know.... The cool thing about making an adjuster that way is that you can pull out the hammer spring without disassembling the back end of the gun each time.... Cool

Incidently, replacing the trigger spring with one made from 0.020" wire makes the trigger a lot lighter and gives it a nice 2-stage feel.... again, I'm trying to convince Eric to carry those.... Wink

Bob,

While spending a few dollars on a rifle that's pretty darn good straight out of the box, I don't mind doing, buying more tools I have some issues with right now. Mainly that of fighting with a mortgage company that doesn't want to honor an agreement made with my mother shortly before her death. Meaning...what little workshop I have now, I may have to sell.

A rifle can easily be tucked into a closet, a drill press not so easily so. So unless I can buy parts (for now) I'll have to do without until this issue is resolved.

Kanyon, skip the 4-16x. Get some better glass with a 4-12. IIRC you mostly hunt, no? My glass doesn't leave minimum magnification unless I'm sighting or doing something really special.

Double swivel studs up front? Mounting a sling on top of a bipod looks a little weak. A rifle is useless without a sling, a pistol is useless without a holster.

Maybe a brake or a piece from Joe?

Well, the disco I sold to Maxom already has a sling on it, and as far as a bipod the disco already has a front sling swivel. It's not that I don't like the disco, but I have a bad back and the pumping killed me. It's a really nice rifle for hunting, but like I said I can't pump it up.

oddtodd,

That's one of the reasons I wanted one. I'm gonna work pumping up the disco into my daily work out schedule. My issue isn't so much a bad back, as it is too large of a belly pulling on back! Embarassed

Hey Jax,
As others have stated,I think you will love the Disco out of the box.I've kept mine stock. However I'm installing a home made power adjuster, and doing a caliber swap since mine came as a .177.The parts for the power adjuster....under a buck. Twisted Evil

I like to keep it simple. The Disco is a tack driver out of the box.I love to shoot aspirins at my home range, which is from the living room, down the hall into the bathroom, provided the Mrs. is at work. Shocked I'll nail an aspirin most of the time free hand, unless of course I've had too much coffee. EyesWideOpenI won't be doing any more mods,as I like it the way it is.Plus I see a Marauder or a Blizzard S-10 on the horizon,so I'm saving up...... Mr. Green

Honestly, the only mods I'm interested in doing now after having read bob's experiments this past year, are the heavier hammer spring, and a power adjuster. Everything else would be bling, such as bipod, nice scope, mebbe a muzzle brake.

I think what I need now is some suggestions on how to set up a good indoor range. I have to take some measurements, but I'm guessing I have somewhere of about 40-50 feet (13-16 yards) distance from front to back, in order to site any scope I get in as well as practice and determine which pellets this particular rifle prefers.

For a rifle of this quality, the least I can do for it is buy a good scope. I've gone beyond just looking at center point and bushnell. While I'm not about to drop mega dollars for a high end Leupold, there are some made by Hawke, and Mtc Viper that I'm looking at. My only concern is nobody ever mentions these brands, so I'm not sure of the quality.

I've had good success with both the 3-9 x 40 and 4-14 x 50 Leapers.... I prefer the 3-9 because you can use medium height rings.... My favourite scopes are Bushnell, but you can't get most of their models in Mil-Dot, and I've fallen in love with those.... They do have a 5-15 x 40 Legend with Mil-Dot, but I don't know anything about it....

You need to decide what you are going to use the rifle for.... I use a fixed 4 x 32 AO on my Grouse guns.... bright, wide field, good for low-light.... For close-in to moderate ranges I love the 3-9 x 40 AO.... for a long range gun, I would use either a 5-15 or a 4-16, and that's the best choice for Hunter FT.... IMO, the only use for higher magnifications is at extreme ranges from a good solid rest.... or for open FT work where you use the high magnification in combination with the AO for range estimation....

Whatever you buy, make sure it has an adjustable objective (AO) that focuses down to the minimum range you want to shoot at....

Bob
