The exhaust chute uses the motor's cooling fan for suction, so every little bit of dust you ever make is drawn past the bearing. The bearing siezes, spins in its plastic mount - and a few seconds after turning it off the melted plastic freezes and locks the motor shaft solid. My birthday is this month, so I know what I'll be getting. Except - that really means wait for the sales after Thanksgiving. In the interim there is a way - but it isn't shop teacher approved: Then there is the matter of Irwin "Quick Grip" clamps (a gift, as was the sander). After about six uses the only thing they do quickly is come loose. As for the clamps I have a set which look the similar to yours, and when new one of the pair did not work very well, I took it to pieces and the problem was that inside the grip unit there are two plates the grip the steel bar to clamp, the plates should be free and able to move against each other, on my unit they were stuck together an once freed the clamp as worked perfectly ok. The plates do indeed slide against each other, but also (unfortunately) slide against the bar. I think I'll stick with screw type clamps: Which is not to say they're useless - my daughter is home from college, and is making her Halloween costume. She grabbed the clamps and used them to hold things while the paint dried. So now I guess we have three classes of tools - professional, household, and fairy: About the sander, Alstone: Are we talking Rolls Royce Merlin, or would a Chevy 350 be enough? Kidding aside, I'm happy you made the suggestion. I have an older scroll saw powered by an external motor via "V" belt. It's like Alstone had been here. Airgun projects are a notch lower in priority than sewing projects, so sometimes I am totally displaced from the kitchen table. (Maccari moly paste and red Loctite don't mix well with fabric.) Speaking of airgun acquisition syndrome - there are four sewing machines in the house (well, three - one is off in my daughter's dorm room). I'm not allowed to even place my grubby paws on them, much less modify them. I made some fitted sandbags once, using my wife's fancy schmancy Swiss machine at 3:00 A.M. I solve many a problem on the kitchen table, after making parts for something in the work shop and not sure where to go next, I adjourn to the kitchen plonk the bits on the table turn on the telly and get a beer, it sooths the though process.
