Ok guys and gals...I am very new to this forum but I shoot Sporting Clays and 5-Stand competitively in Texas. I do not know what to buy .177 or .???
I have a varmint problem and need to get rid of them, but I do live in a nice area of town and I do not want to harm anyone with a stray pellet...if you know what I mean. So anyway, I need a very quiet shooting pellet gun that is about $300.00 or under with a scope.
I have been looking at the Gamo Whisper VH .177cal Air Rifle for its quietness and the darn thing look sweet too.... So what do I buy and what CAL. do I need. I might add that I would like to take it hunting in the woods some as well.
Thanks for the advise in advance ya'll!! |

| It depends on what varmint you want to hunt. But you can read all about that too in the Hunting section. |

| I wouldn't mind having a .22 cal whisper myself, so I say go for that one. |

A .22 is for general small game hunting while a .17 is for plinking(as a rule of thumb)
A .22 will carry more energy down range giving you a higher fpe than a .17 would.
What size animals are you looking to kill with your airgun? |

| I've seen a squirrel hit 3 times with a .177 cal, inluding one shot in the ear....and it STILL required another head shot to kill it. Bottomline, .177 cal pellets aren't very good at killing game. You need a .22. |

| i'll toos my opinion into the ring as well.... i dont even look at .177 guns anymore.... but besides my feeling that bigger is better for killin stuff... the added size of the pellet makes its easier to load. |

Anything quiet costs more than the $300 you want to spend. Some people on the boards here have complained that the gamo isn't very accurate also.
No matter which gun you decide make sure to get a .22 you'll be happier in the end.
If I had the money I would get the real accurate and real quiet Benjamin Marauder http://www.pyramydair.com/p/Benjamin-Marauder-air-rifle.shtml
But with a sticker of $499 plus air pump of $199 its not something I could talk the wife into letting me get, maybe in a couple more years |

| A lot of springers are fairly quiet to begin with. So I'd say there is no need to be more quiet than a whisper, which is the quietest springer currently available. |

I have a Gamo Silent Cat .177
So far, I have 11 squirrels and not one of them has needed 2 shots.
I am shooting Crossman Destroyer pellets.
They have all been at least 20 yards away, high in the branches of trees.
And, pellet placement has not mattered that much.
Most of the shots are either heart or head shots though. |
