My uncle got a crappy table top telescope as a prize at work...

The box said C Star 22-150x50mm. Oh how wrong. I'm guessing that the thing has an MSRP of $100. It came with a lens for terrestrial viewing, which set it at 22x.

Took it out to a field to watch some critters. At least 5mm on the perimeter of the view was a complete blurr. Even with the bright sunlight the image was still dark. Everything also had a blue tinge. Now with that I could barely make out a groundhog at 300 yards.

Walking back to the shop, I got an idea, mount my Centerpoint 4-16x40 on it. By just changing out the bolt which held the original piece on the tripod, the scope mounts would work with the tripod. I went back to the field and noted how much clearer the image was. With the objective set at infinite, and on 10x mag I got a brighter, clearer, more detailed image on the same groundhog. Looking at the high tension wires through just (150 yards) 12x I could easily see everything. The starlings on the pylons couldn't move without me noticing. This definitely didn't happen when I used that P.O.S. telescope.

This is why you don't waste your money on the super cheap optics. $75 scope beat out a telescope designed to look at the stars. Now I'm going to go relax and watch the critters.
