| I just got an RWS 48,man is it heavy. Iunderstand you should not rest a springer on a solid,or hard surface when shooting. So are bipods usable or not? If they are can anyone a recommendation? |

Hi Charles welcome to AirGunHome.
Bipods don't really work with springers, what I use is a rolled up towel and rest the gun on that, it lets the gun move naturally, I also use a leather shooting bag filled with sand ideal for shooting of the hood of a car. (see below)
If you do need to rest on something hard then rest your hand on it first then the gun in your palm.

| Thanks ALSTONE, you just confirmed what I suspected. The gun is heavy enough anyway. I think I will buy some nice, simple shooting bags instead. |

You can use a bipod, but it likely won't work well. Now if you had a D52 then you would have great success due to the recoil system.
I agree with what Alstone suggested. |

Hi..the thing is with rests / bipods...when a springer is sited for one type
if you use it on a diffrent type or free hand the Point Of Impact "POI"will change....
I have one gun that from the shoulder I can stack pellets at 10m with
but use it on a rest or bipod and the POI is 40mm higher and slightly
to the left...As a springer moves when fired " recoil & twist" and each
type of rest / bipod / free hand lets it move slightly diffrently witch
changes the POI....

| Why do people love springers so much? They seem to be very complicated. |

LOL...They are cheap compaired to a PCP which also needs filling gear..
they are the air gun that everyone starts out with..
As far as the change in POI...I never use mine from a rest/bipod..
Not into target shooting...

You mean the 54.
The D48 works fine with a Bipod. I use a Bipod with mine, and for plinking it works great. Side note is though, if you want to get good groupings, you coul try going for something like a sandbag.
PCP's aren't that much more expensive, you just gotta run into one. |

Their not complicated just fussy about how they are held, basically as loose as possible to let the gun move. The thing about Springer’s is that they can be loaded and fired at any time, with out having to pressurise with air or charge with Co2, all you need is a gun and a pellet no compressed air tank that needs filling or Co2 cartridges which are expensive, plus Co2 doesn’t like cold weather.

Yes Broom I meant the 54.
Was the 48 a side or underlever? I know the 52 is side. |

I use a wimpy Ram-Line plastic bipod that clamps on to the barrel. No, it's not as accurate as a proper rest (although it is more accurate than a rigidly fixed bipod). Yes, it does raise the POI. Sometimes convenience makes it a viable alternative, and sometimes not.

Here's a quick and dirty example. This is a G1 with RWS 8.2 grain Meisterkugeln's at 10m. I used the same aiming point, but shifted to mil dots right or left of the crosshairs to keep the same elevation between the three groups. Meisterkugeln's aren't the G1's favorite diet, but it was raining and the good stuff was in the car. The group on the left was using just my elbows for support, center was with a sandbag, and right was with the Ram-Line bipod. The bipod was placed on the barrel touching the breech block, the sandbag supported the gun at its center of mass, as did my hand in the remaining example:
So both the sandbag and bipod were a help, with different consequences for the point of impact. I wouldn't rule out bipods for springers (at least this bipod), but it's important to consider the effects on POI. |
