I wonder if any of you could shed some light on something for me.
Will humid compressed air promote rust faster than humid un-compressed air? The reason I ask is because last week my Benji 392 stopped holding air.
I could not generate any pressure at all; each stoke of the lever was easy as pie.
I disassembled the rifle and found the hammer spring bright and shiny like a new nickle. I removed the valve assembly and put it aside, then removed the pump piston, thinking maybe the cup was damaged. It also looked good.
I unscrewed the valve assembly and when I pulled the two halves apart I was appalled at what I found. Rust literally dropped out of the valve like dust all over my work table. The spring was totally rusted and no longer springy. Also, the seal on the exhaust valve pin was shot.
I can order the parts and get the rifle fixed, no doubt, but what caused this?
I live in a high humidity environment, usually hangs around 80-85%. And I have always stored the rifle in an outdoor shed which doesn't get rained into but shares the same air as the outdoors. Also, I always stored the rifle with a pump of air in the valve.
Since the hammer spring is bright and shiny, and the valve spring is total rust, my guess is that the humid air under pressure accelerates the rusting process.
Could this be the case, ya think? |

| in a word... YES.... air under pressure causes the moisture to seprate and become liquid. just like in a shop air compressor, theres a reason you drain the tank after a full day of use. |

Boy don't i know it! Dr's right! I went to do some sanding on my truck, connected up my orbital sander, started removing rust/old paint, wasn't but a few mintues and it started spitting water all over. Disconnecte everything, and opened up the valve at the bottom, out comes all this water!
I'm hoping I didn't mess up my compressor to badly. I used it alot last fall, right up until the temps plumeted. I remembered to decomress the air by opening the valve after the final use, but totally forgot about draining the tank before our long cold winter up here.
Same could be said about some brass intruments. I use to play a Trumpet in grammer school. Warm moist air from your lungs running through all that brass pipe would cool down and clog the intrument. So they have two or three valves you can drain the instrument with.
I'm surprised this wasn't concidered when it comes to ag's. |

| That'd be like saying does burning compressed air burn stuff faster than burning un-compressed air. |

Thanks guys for your helpful replies.
I've been looking around and can't even find parts for the Benji.
The Crosman site has a great custom shop, but there
is no link to order just individual parts.
Maybe I've got to contact them directly.
Thanks again. |

| Yes, call them and inquire about ordering parts for a broken gun. |

Thanks for that address, Joe. Just what I needed. I already
have the diagram and the parts and price list. I'll give
Kimmy a holler.
Thanks again. |

Amen, brothers and sisters!
I believe in Ted Nugent; I've seen him on T.V. All you have to do is put the empty pellet tin under your pillow, and...... |
