Hello again,

Last year I asked about the odd behavior of my Crosman 2100 while defending my 3 bird feeders from squirrels.
http://www.airgunhome.com/agforum/viewtopic.php?t=1522&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15
Hard to pump past 5 pumps and with nothing I could even call a "grouping" at 35 - 40 feet.

I ended impaling one with my blowgun and that seemed to keep them away for the rest of the season. So all thoughts of fixing replacing or dealing with the malfunction faded as fall faded to winter.

Now, however, the're baaaaack Sigh! I dug out the Crosman 2100 (before putting it away I did oil and clean it etc) and set up a target about 40 feet away.

With BB's I'm getting a "grouping" of about 2.5" all to the right of center and lower but with lead pellets I'm getting a grouping of ~ .75 " slightly to the left and lower of center. I pumped it 5 time in each case. I wonder if this tells any of you more experienced shooters anything new?

If not I guess I will replace it with a CO2 rifle I will use mostly to protect the bird feeders. I want to stick to .177 cal because I have ammo remaining. I most likely will take apart the Crosmen 2100 to see what's up with it and maybe mod it to use compressed air or something, dunno yet.

The Crosman RepeatAir 1077 looks like it will do the job nicely and is in about the right price range.

If not that then maybe another pumper (sigh) like the Crosman Powermaster 664SB maybe? A rifled barrel seems an important feature for accuracy.

Any thoughts on any of the above would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Pump it 10 times, not 5.

If it's still not great, try re-crowning the barrel.

If it still sucks, buy a proper pellet rifle, not a combo BB-pellet shooter they are inherently less accurate due to the smoothbore barrel required for use with BBs.

+1. You could also try looking at a springer. If you're already buying a rifle in a caliber that you already own, just to safe cash, then at least get something you will know that will get the job done without modding it. CO2 is often quite inneficient in .177 so unless you have CO2 to spare, I would suggest getting one that doesn't use gas.

The 2100 is really a sort of entry level gun. There are pumpers that would work better for you. As mentioned a good springer will work also. if you decide to go with CO2 my suggestion is that you don't go with a low end one. An RWS 850 will do a fine job (but be aware that co2 is temperature sensative. Not too good at below 65 degrees F.

Thanks very much for the timely replies.

@ AirGunEric
Tried 10 pumps with a BB. Shot 1 went where the pellets did ..that is, slightly to the left and lower of center. The 2nd try was off the target, never saw it! Small sample I know but 20 pumps is a pain so I stopped at 2 tries.

Crowning is an interesting idea and seems fairly straightforward. The real barrel is recessed about .5” and difficult to tell if there is bore damage. So I would need to disassemble 1st to look more closely.

And maybe a better gun indeed!

@ broommaster2000
I had not considered a springer because I wanted more shots per “counter attack” but now I see my pumper required 5 pumps ( and maybe now 10?) so one cock of a springer would be faster and they seem to have a lot of power and no CO2 to mess with, That's a real plus!

@ thepaladin
The 2100 was doing the job fine for years ( 3 maybe) then it went off. So I guess a more expensive gun will last longer with better performance. I do remember my very first BB gun was an inexpensive lever action Daisy that lasted years and could shoot the wings off a fly. Geeeees I guess that was a springer too!

I looked at the RWS 850 and found it to be a very sweet gun but much more then I care to spend defending my bird feeders. And then there is the CO2 issue which I guess I have talked myself out of considering....again.

OK so after considering all your comments and rethinking my requirements a springer looks like a good option for me.

Looking at springers I found the Crosman Quest 1000 (x) with and without a scope that has good reviews and is about in the price range I want.

I guess getting the proper pellet will require some tests and effort but no CO2. The Crosman Quest 1000 (x) has a rifled barrel, powerful and appears to be easy to cock.

I found 3 vendors that look promising: Air guns of Arizona, Pyramyd Air and the Airgun Depot.

Any thoughts on any of the above?

Thank again!

Bob C.

You'd definitely enjoy a springers' ease and power compared with a multi-pump. Also, and obviously all about preference, I think an inexpensive scope would help with precision shot placement; i.e. said tree rats cranium. Headshot

I've never gone wrong with Pyramyd Air.

I've bought most of my guns from Pyramyd. I got the only Chinese air rifle I have from Airgun Depot, not too bad there either. I'm hesitant to recomend the Chinese air rifles. The one I have has been great so far, I understand they can run hot and cold though. They cost a lot less as you are looking at the price, you just have to be aware of quality.

So I got a very good air rifle for very little money, but I've read reports from others who bought a Tech Force that had very negative expeinces.

Still there are several good air gun dealers on line.

Not sure what has changed.....again...... but it has!

The tree rats (tr) continue to attack and eat my bird feeders and seeds with no alternative yet in hand I thought I could, at least scare it off with the sound of a shot.

I opened the window quietly.. The tr looked up momentarily but ignored the sound and continued to pillage my seeds so I opened the bolt placed a pellet in and proceeded to pump up the ol' Crosman 2100, lowered the rife for a shot and POOF the tr ran off. Well not as dramatic a scare but it was gone.

Grumbling a little and not wanting to leave the gun charged I took aim at the target I made still in position. POW and suddenly I was a 1/2" from the center of my makeshift bulls eye. Several more attempts later confirmed accuracy had "returned".

The next day (yesterday) a very bold tr attacked my feeder again. Repeating the steps above but this time I got a shot off... POW ... the tr flew off the feeder but this time did not and could not run off. A few waves of paws and a 2nd shot and I had this season's 1st tr.

The difference? Not exactly sure but taking advice given here:

1 More pumps...

2 Pellets not BBs.

Thanks guys, my bird feeders and I are in your debt.

We strongly recommend you to get something better though. A pumper like that is a hunter. You will probably get instant kills with an entry level springer.

Yep, I highly recommend no matter what gun you shoot, you should shoot pellets, not BBs.

BB's won't rifle and spin to give you more precision. They just bounce back and forth down the barrel until they leave the end of the gun and then fly through the air with not much accuracy.

Oh, and I'm sure you understood broommaster2000, he just left out the important word "not." lol

A pumper like that is not a hunter.

@Crosman140
Thanks for the clarification.
I have mostly ALWAYS shot BB's and it seemed to work well, then suddenly it did not, clearly the pellets are working better.

An update:
Things have been quiet around the ol' bird feeders for the past few days but my wife did see a squirrel at the base of one of the two of her feeders this morning I, however, did not.Shocked

If I do need to get a new air gun you guys have convinced me a springer will best meet my requirements and for that I'm most great full.

Reading this site and elsewhere it appears getting the proper pellet will also require some tests and effort. If not done properly damage could occur to the spring or shorten the life of the gun. It that's true, can small numbers of various pellets (sample packs) be purchased somewhere, is all that really necessary?

Pelletor,
I picked up this .177 Crosman Quest 1000X with scope last fall on sale at Meijers for $59.00 on a clearance sale.If I remember correctly it was $63 and change out the door after tax.
K-Mart-some Walmarts,Dicks Sporting Goods,Sportsmans Warehouse all seem to carry this Chinese made Crosman.
With a little work on the trigger thay can be made into a real nice shooter,or you can buy a GRT drop in trigger from here http://charliedatuna.com/GRT-III%20Trigger%20New.htm
This one after a lube tune, recrowned barrel, and torque washers added at both ends of the main spring shoots 7.9 gr hollowpoint pellets in the 850fps range,I have the trigger pull to a light crisp 1.3 lbs. smooth and no creep. My personal opinion for the money they can't be beat for a hard accurate shooter.
With a little time and work they can be made to be a respectable looking rifle too!! As is my Super Quest in .20 Caliber. With Diana internals and Lother/Walther barrel.
I added a aperture rear peep sight and used a Crosman TAC 1 Extreme muzzle break which I welded the hooded front sight with interchangeable inserts to go with the rear sight.Under the muzzle is a laser for point and shoot from the hip capabilities.
