hello fellow airgunners,

i was thinking about converting my .177 quest 1000 into a .22 Shocked .
how does one go about doing this? do you just swap the .177 barrel with a .22 one? and maybe beef up the powerplant to compensate?
anyone have any xp with this?

You should be able to get a .22 barrel from crosman.
you won't need to do anything to the power plant as they are the same in .177 & .22

They are the same internals, although early Quest's have the spring and spring guides a bit differently sized than the more recent versions (which is irrelevant to your barrel change idea).

So yes, just swap the barrels (and the bushings might also be a good idea if your rifle has gotten alot of use). Crosman was having difficulties producing the .22 barrels as spare parts for awhile, hopefully they've got that straightened out.

I'm not sure where this idea of "more fpe" started- but it's not necessarily true. It would depend on any one specific gun and the specs on the specific .177 and .22 cal barrels being compared. If one seals better than the other or such, this could hold true- but that isn't really a 'caliber' issue or effect.

If we're talking about short-range shooting, then a heavier pellet of any sort will retain more energy when it contacts the target ('retain' being the key word here), but a heavier pellet will also drop out faster, so for longer distances it might not make it to the target.

It's the phrase "more fpe" that might give people the wrong idea- the gun itself is not releasing more energy because of a larger caliber projectile.

[quote="the gun itself is not releasing more energy because of a larger caliber projectile.[/quote].

i always thought a .22 springer had higher energy than .177 due to larger diameter?? learn somethin' every day. Very Happy

True dat, however, a very powerful rifle is most often better in .22 then in .177.

So it's actually depending on the power of the rifle which caliber one should/could want. Wink

sniper, i dont know if your a gear head or not... but look at it like this:

changing the projectile size is like changing the final gearing on a bike or car.
the vehicle may end up accelerating faster with "shorter" gearing, but you are not putting any more power to the ground, all you have done is change HOW that power is delivered and WHERE its delivered.

hope that analogy helps.

my basis is:

the tech 89 is 18fpe in .177 says tom gaylord.
mine in .22 is 21fpe

the bam-26 in .177 is 13.77fpe.
mine in .22 is 16.46 fpe.

i have a chrony.

there MUST be an exception to the rule!!

The exception being more Fpe with a lighter pellet or something?

Any way you put it, .22 is a more efficient calibre to deliver a certain amount of energy. By the way, .20 seems to be a wonderful calibre to.

no. both guns with 14.5 super domes. i've chrony'd light and heavy. sd's are the highest fpe.

my tech 89 hits around 17-18fpe w/kodiaks.. 18fpe w/rws hobby...... 20-21 sd...

and yes, having .22 has rendered .177 useless to me anyway...

Here the thing a lot of these figgers are at or near the muzzel.
get a reading of fps-pellet weight at 40/50 metres out and you may well be shocked....the .22 genarates more fpe but a .177 will hold its fps & fpe
a lot further out than a .22..hence the reasion I hunt with .177 springers.
I would hunt with .22 springers if the bunnys would stay at 10/20m range
but at 40+ metres give me the .177 every time.
and the .177 pellet flys flater so the POI shift isn't as much from 20 to 50m
so less mill dot counting.

And the cal has nothering to do with FPE....its feet per second verses pellet weight...the shape /length/dia of the weight has very little to do with anything, just that .22 pellets are heavyer than .177 get a pellet in .177 & .22 of the same weight and the .177 will genarate more FPE
becuase of the smaller frontal area letting it travel at a higher FPS.

I had a lot of luck with Gamo TS10 pellets in my .177 but the POI change was to much at diffret distances....I try to stay in the 8 to 8.5 grain range.
