I was in Cabela's today, the first time since before Christmas. In that time the number of airgun models they carry has just about doubled (at least in the Owatonna, Minnesota location).
Then I went to look at pellets. The Gamo Rockets and Raptors were abundant and neatly arranged. The traditional pellets (Gamo and RWS) were a jumbled mess on a shelf, with no more than a couple of tins of each type/caliber. They had more of the Cabela's branded (Crosman) pellets, but they were heaped together also. I cleaned them out of RWS .177 Superdomes - two tins.
Do Cabela's customers buy airguns just to look at? A friend of mine just went to work there, and he says Cabela's absorbs so much ammunition that they are second only to the U.S. military. You sure wouldn't guess that based on what I saw. |

| Pyramid Air sends me 500 count tins via UPS and if I order 3 the 4th is free. I find it on my doorstep! Why would I go to a store to buy pellets? |

That's the wave of the future for me. Are you listening, Cabela's? |

I just went to Cabela's myself in SE PA. I concur with the selection of AG's they have availible. Just about every decent one you'd find on Pyramyds site, and they were all there for you to touch, feel, and hold. I was able to shoulder the RWS350 Pro Compact, and realized how HEAVY that gun was, something you can't do online. Although it'd probably would've been better if I was shopping online considering all the drooling I was doing! |

I found the same thing at a (I think it was Cabela's) in Florida a couple of months ago.
They seemed to love Gamo's- rifles all over the place. Pellets not so much... |

| <sighs>All the good shops are easily an hour's drive for me. Locally, I either have sports mart or sports authority. (basically large sporting goods clothing stores). |

No Cabela's anywhere near me. I get their catalog, but I wish there was a store nearby. |

This is how it works:
Gamo = (fake) velocity
Powder shooters usually just think about velocity. They hear a airgun is doing velocity near a .22lr- buy it.
They also don't shoot that much because of the cost of high caliber rifle ammo. This means they will buy a 500 tin of pellets and it will last them a couple months. They also don't know much about airgun ballistics, so they will buy the crappy pellets.
Don't blame them, they are just uneducated, and (should) would be happy to learn. |
