I am wondering if cold weather affects springers? This is my first one and I wasn't sure. I know my 2300 has the power of a red ryder in the cold, but my disco doesn't care about anything weather-wise. I just want to play with my storm outside.  |

Hm, it shouldn't matter much however it could be that because it's colder that the metal shrinks or something. I guess that's with extreme temperatures only though.
That wouldn't be different on a non-springer, I guess. |

I find that it takes about 3-5 shots to get my TX up to speed on very cold days, It's the cold lubrication that slows things down.
Not that it make a lot of diffrence about 10mm drop at 20m.

I shoot my springers in the below zero weather all of the time.
They will chrony a little slower, but it won't hurt them.
There is usually no difference in the operation of a PCP
in regards to ambient temperature. |

Even in warm weather lubricant distribution can be an issue for the first few shots after storage. Cold weather will just make it worse, but after a few shots it should be O.K. |

After reading this post this morning I decided to dig out the chrony and test my 630.......At 20 degrees in my basement it is shooting at 680fps with crosman pointed. Now I took it outside and set it on my patio table for 5 minutes in -18degrees. First shot was 620 fps......but after that the average velocity was 660-675.......
Hope this sheds some light on the subject. |

-18 degrees! You must have a refrigerator outside you back door Jonathan, but it certainly proved the point.
I suspect that it was the lubrication stiffing up that was the main cause, but depending upon the construction of the gun the metal parts would also shrink, so this would have a contributing factor.
Nice experiment.

this is actually a topic i've been meaning to bring up. my thoughts have been more centered on the temperature differential between the metal of the barrel and the pellet.
for the sake of argument, lets say your outside and the ambient temp is at 32 degrees. youve been out for at least an hour, enough time for the barrel to get cold. you keep the pellets in a pocket next to your body keeping them at a toasty 70 degrees.
what are youre thoughts on the effects (if any) of this? |

| Well, I'm used to working on a large scale. Before I was disabled I ust wo work on one of the largest refrigeration unit in the US and we had to work with a lot of expansion and conteraction since the system was so large. Lead doesn't expand very much, but copper was, so all the lines had to be brazed in order to get a more mechanically sound joint. So, I'm figuring that since it it expands very little over a 100 degree range, there ought to not be any problems with it in an air gun. Just my 2 cents. Sorry this is so unreadable. The painkillers are making it hard to think this mornign. |

I think that if the piston is running on derilin bearings or buttoned it would not be bothered to much by cold weather, but if it is just metal to metal the outer compression tube will contract more than something fairly solid like a piston, which could reduce the tolerances and slow things down.
There again it would have to be very cold to make a diffrence.

With the piston being smaller and less mass than the compression tube the shrinkage would be less.

| I'm curious. Joe mentioned he was using a sock over his bulk co2 2250. Take that a step further, would there be any harm in wrapping those hand/foot warmer things around your co2 carts? Could the get too hot and potentially explode? |

I use the same kind of thing for my back at work sometimes. They are really variable - they run hot and cold, so to speak. It depends on how fast heat is being lost, and how much oxygen they get. I can't answer the explosion question, but my guess is that they would be hard to regulate.
How about some of that styrofoam pipe insulation under a nice camo sock? |
