i recently did the phantom 500 convertion meaning the piston mod for the 1000. first thing when i shot the first time after the mod flames came out of the barrel. normal or not? also the sound is border-line ear peircing. the flames have gone away now. I guess from the oil that was used. well i did the first pellet test shot on a metal bucket only to find that it is penetrating both sides rather than before it would onlly made a dent in one side from stock. But the really weird part is.. I dont know how this is happening but i shot from 10 feet away and the pellet is breaking in two in the air or the barrel and acually making two holes. One very small clean round hole from part of the pellet head and the cup portion is hitting on its side and making a big entrance hole, and bigger exit but still peircing through both sides. Very weird im trying to decide if this was a good, meaning safe mod, Any ideas? info would be great!

Sounds like extreme dieselling (detonation). You obviously got alot of petroleum-based oil in the chamber and may have over-lubed the tube innards as well. All this is evidence by the flames out the barrel.

Put something in the chamber to help dilute the petroleum oil- i.e. silicone oil, or take it apart and clean it up. Either way, if this goes on too long you risk damaging the seal and/or the spring.

As for the pellet splitting, sounds odd, but it may just be rotating strangely due to the excessive force behind it and leaving this 'split' look pattern on your backboard.

Is it making two distinct entrance holes, or are they connected?

Definitely clean out the petroleum based lubricant. A pellet gun that spits flames isn't normal. Probably cool to look at (until the seal melts), but not normal.

Please post a picture of your seal, I'd love to see how that looks right now.

Its for sure making two holes about a half an inch away from each other from only ten feet. Dont know if its the new pellets i got got yesterday. The brand is diablo made in czeck republik. About the lube, i last night stripped it down again to change to different lube supplied by my surplus store. As soon as i can i will post pics of the bucket to show everyone how strange this is. It seems ive modded my rifle to a shotgun with buckshot.

I second what Broom said.

You need to disassemble the gun, clean all of the parts, and reassemble,
taking geat care to not get ANY lubricant in the chamber or in front
of the piston seal. You will most likely need a new seal for optimal
performance. Place a SMALL amount of moly paste and/or chamber
oil on the piston right behind the piston seal. After assembly, cycle the
action (move the barrel back and forth without cocking it) 6-7 times
before firing to distribute the lube before discharging.

There should be NO flames, dieseling or ANY smoke at all if it is
correctly lubricated.
