Funny, by coincidence I dug out my vernier just two days ago for use. (I already knew how to read it). Mine has two scales, one in 16ths of an inch and another in 32nds. The vernier scale slides along the 16ths scale and is graduated for 8/128ths, making it about half as accurate as even a .1mm caliper.
A vernier like mine is very inexpensive, but relatively not very precise.
Slavia, are you still using that micrometer ? If not, send it to me; I can use it. |

Roy - sorry, I still use it.
I like the vernier because it doesn't use batteries, and there is nothing to get gummed up or slip. |

CW be very careful with those things
I have seen some real F _ _ _ up becuase of those things.
They don't hold zero for long.
And the minute you forget to check thats when it happens |

| I worry about the people who use the cheapy digital calipers- i.e. the $10.00 "specials". I like to think the mid-range $50 Fowler unit I have does a bit better than most of the cheapy units- but I may be dreaming anyways. |

It's good to check the zero on any measurement device.
Whatever the quality or precision, calipers are pretty useful. Of course, for machine tool setups quality is better. I find that often I use mine as a go/no go gauge, where precision doesn't matter. This is especially true when I go to the hardware store to find something that will be modified anyway. |
