Looking around some of the European airgun sites I found this little mod for reducing the play in a TX rear spring guide.

I’ve had trouble with a twang on firing, when the gun has been lubricated it’s all right for a while, until the lube gets thrown off (This happens with a Maccari or any other lube), so I decided to machine a new guide as the one in my TX has about 20 thou play in it, but in the mean time I found this mod, one thing I did notice is that the closed end of the spring is a smaller dia than the rest, which means that although the spring guide is a good fit at the base, but it is loose elsewhere.

I made the packing from .007” sheet brass shim (The one I saw on a Polish site was made out of a bean can), the photos show how simple it is to make, I have had it in my TX for about 2 months and it sorted out the problem, (about 2000 pellets), mine looks a bit battered as it’s been rolling about my work bench for a week, while I machined a new guide to the correct size, because I have the facilities to do so, but there is no reason why the brass shim should not be a permanent mod. One thing you must do if the spring is a tight fit on the base coils, is to grind it out to the dia of the rest of the spring.

This mod should work on any airgun with a similar guide.

Happy Modding

Al

I know this is an old post but , it's been very helpfull to me , due to that I dont have the tools to machine my stuff
I been working on a Gamo Hunter 1250 lately trying different springs , and I found one that works great, the only problem is the ID in the new spring , it's a little bigger than the original , on the tophat it's ok I can have one made to specs but for the rear guide I can't because the guide is way different than the one shown in alstones pictures but with that tip I can easily fix my problem ,
thanks.

Somehow I missed this 'way back when'.

How did you fasten the brass ends together when you wrapped it around Al?

that's a good one if you have no tools(lathe etcc..)
but if you can make a precision sleeve, coudn't you just make a new guide.Rolling Eyes
Just wondering.

It seems like you could just get the spring in there with some lube and that would tighten it all up without fastening anything.

If the original guide is metal, you could tig weld it. Probably zirconium tungsten and dcep(dcrp), helium shielding.

You don't need to, the power adjusting ring at the bottom holds that part in place, and the rest is left loose. I have tried this fix out and it works perfectly, and because the spring is round in section it acts as a guide to keep the shim in place.

If you have all the gear to make a new spring guid then no problem, but most people don't, so any mod that can be done with hand tools is worth a lot, and I just spotted it on another forum tried it out and found it to work well.

Not only do you get an improved gun, but there's a lot of satisfaction in figuring out a way to do what you want with what you've got. Plus it enhances familiarity with tools and materials, so the next mod comes easier.

I have used eletrical heat shrink to pack up a lose guide....
it comes in diffret thickness & Dia's...and the more it shrinks the thicker it becomes..so playing with diffrent thickness & dia you can control the finished thickness some what....If yer try it..get the heat shrink with the glue coating on the inside....just cut a bit a wee bit longer "it shrinks length wise too" put it over the guide and stick it the oven for a few mins & trim length after its cooled.... if its a plastic guide use a heat gun.

Found out yesterday that pre engineering shop has a mill AND lathe. Bastards. I'm just a few doors down though, and have some friends in there so maybe I can get some time on it.

previously,i had unlimited lathe/mill time,,,no more.
i do have freinds in the (new) machine shop.
NOW, i provide materials, and give a detailed print.
work is normaly done in 30 min or less.
i can always give an oversized print(always/barely), then i adjust.
then i can do a homeade/excact finish w/ emery cloth.
if you know your numbers/measurements, your buddy may be able to pop it out in seconds.
be sure your numbers are good.

I would like to modify my Benjamin Classic 22 to get more power. Are there any sites available where I can get information with regards to piston/seal modification or replacement instructions. Are there any transfer port modifications or any other modifications that can be done to improve?
