This morning I stopped at Cabela's, and also at the local farm/fleet outlet. Both had Beeman P17's. The frames were labeled "Beeman P17." The blister packs were labeled "Model 2006." The instruction leaflet was titled "Marksman 2004."

Shakespeare must have had one when he wrote the "a rose by any other name" line.

Ha Ha. I had someone ask me about that a couple days ago- and all I could determine was that Beeman decided to sell a copy of a copy of its own gun and discontinue the Marksman version (the P17 was the Marksman 2004, which was a copy of the Beeman P3). So- WTF is Beeman doing???

And for anyone not aware of it, Beeman and Marksman are the same company these days...

So here it is, two months later. Today I found the P17 (marked as such) in a blister pack labeled "Beeman Sportsman Series" and "2004K." Where it used to be packaged with a red dot sight, now it has safety glasses and Beeman "special coating" pellets.

They need to consider taking the Alice B. Toklas brownies off the menu in the corporate lunchroom.

I think everyone is "cheaping out"- economy goes a bit southward, sales drop and everyone starts trying to find ways to make a few more bucks- typically raising prices and/or eliminating features/add-ons. Not sure why more companies can't seem to handle losing 10% of their sales without getting wet pants. "Shareholder return" is the common scapegoat. Problem is- when they don't sell anything because they cheaped out- the "shareholder return" drops to less than zero!

Companies change hands, repetative models get discontinued, existing stock has to be sold. Thus we get this kind od situation. All I can suggest is watch for a good price, once all this shakes out, it'll go back up to the highest water mark. Rolling Eyes

Beeman/Marksman isn't the only one that is confused. Here is a review on the "Crosman 2004" (the mistake is mentioned in the first post):

http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews68571.html

They give it a "thumbs down," but if you look to the same source for a review on the Marksman 2004, it gets a "thumbs up":

So make sure you don't buy a gun that doesn't exist.
